((Don't have a gif so here's a drabble instead!))
Joanna watched as the couples began dancing slowly with one another as slow and mellow music filled the room. She sighed as she finished the last sip of her drink and scanned around the room for the hundredth time.
Did he not receive the message or had she forgotten to send it?
She fished her phone out of the small pocket on her short dress and went through the messages before she found the one labeled "Desmond." She opened up the tab, their entire conversation history unfolding before her eyes. She scrolled past the previous messages before she got to the last text she'd sent him.
"Christmas party at Shaun's tonight, really hope you can make it! :)" [Sent at 10:30 AM, December 24th]
So she had sent the message, she thought, relieved. But why hadn't he shown up yet? Joanna sighed as she scrolled through their message history, desperately wanting to deny the fact that he probably didn't and wouldn't show up due to the last argument they'd had.
The two had spent the day arguing about Joanna's job as an assassin. Desmond knew she was a capable fighter and knew of her personal history, but was worried about her safety and didn't want her to risk her life out there for the sake of revenge. In the end, the two had exchanged harsh words.
Words that Joanna wished she'd never said.
"What do you know?" She'd retorted. "You were nothing but a bartender and a lab rat anyway!"
Immediately after she'd shouted those words, Joanna had regretted it. The look on Desmond's face was one that she'd never forget.
She sighed again, returning the phone to her pocket before scanning the room once more.
"If I could take everything that I said back, I would do so in a heartbeat..." she thought. "If only I tried looking at things from your perspective, maybe I wouldn't be sitting here alone now...maybe..."
Her thoughts were interrupted when she noticed Desmond standing at the other end of the room with a drink in his hand. He was just as alone as she was, and from the looks of it, he didn't seem to be enjoying the party either. Joanna's heart skipped a beat and she slid off from the bar stool, pushing past the dancing couples as she made her way towards him.
Desmond looked up and spotted Joanna pushing past the others in the sea of couples. He smiled and walked toward her, stopping just a few inches away from her. Neither spoke for a few minutes, both obviously feeling very awkward after the argument.
"H-hi," Joanna spoke first. "I didn't think you'd make it." Desmond smiled and offered his hand to her.
"And miss having a dance with the prettiest girl here?" He grinned. "I don't think so." Joanna smiled and took his hand as he led her to the centre of the room. He twirled her around once before placing his hands on her hips. She wrapped her arms around his neck and the two began swaying to the slow rhythm of the music. The two were silent again, Joanna avoiding his gaze out of awkwardness and guilt.
"You know..." Desmond spoke up suddenly, breaking Joanna out of her thoughts and the awkward silence between them. "I'm sorry about last week." Joanna lifted her head to look at him.
"It wasn't your fault," she shook her head. "I was at fault for saying such things...and not considering things from your point of view." She pulled him closer. "I was not considerate of your feelings either." Desmond chuckled.
"Nor was I..." he twirled her around once again before catching her and holding her close. The two began to sway again. "But let's forget about that, shall we?" Joanna nodded, before a playful and seductive smile played on her lips. Desmond looked at her in confusion.
"What?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. Joanna's smile grew wider and a blush began to form on her cheeks. Slowly, she raised a finger and pointed towards the ceiling. Desmond looked at her finger before slowly shifting his gaze to the mistletoe that hung above them on the ceiling. He too, began to blush a little.
Joanna leaned in and placed a quick, soft kiss on Desmond's lips. She pulled back, grinning.
"Merry Christmas," she said softly.
Desmond smiled and caught her as she pulled back from him. He placed a hand on the back of her neck.
"Merry Christmas to you too," he whispered, pulling her in for another kiss.
