Dasyatis sabina (Lesueur, 1824). Freshwater Atlantic Stingray.
Found from the Chesapeake Bay system to Mexico typically in marine systems, these rays may be found also in brackish, as well as, totally freshwater environments in Florida. It is found in the St. John’s River, Orange River and Lake Jessup.. These rays can take temperatures above 59° F (15° C) and can endure temperatures above 86° F (30° C). Under influences of freshwater, this fish must excrete large amounts of metobilites to deal with increased urea in its blood stream, therefore, it requires extremely great filtration- think wet-dry filtration or massive canister filtration. The substrate should consist of soft, round sand.. Despite being one of the smaller species of this family, they still reach a maximum disc width of 12.8 inches (32.6 cm) for males and 14.6 inches (37 cm) for females. Source:https://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/discover/species-profiles/dasyatis-sabina/ In my experience I have had great luck feeding it live grass feeder shrimp and earthworms when first obtained, and small raw frozen cocktail shrimp. Beware of the stinger when cleaning the tank to prevent injury to yourself from envenomation. I found this fish to be very friendly and learn who their keeper is and will beg for food when they see you. This is a rather magical, peaceful fish, if you have a chance to obtain them and very well worth the effort their husbandry requires!
