You were talking to Daryl when Shane walked up, looking contrite for his previous outburst for once. You still turned and glared at him. You were sick of him picking fights with anyone he could and creating turmoil just to create turmoil. For now though, he seemed apologetic. 

“What do you want?” you asked a little brusquely. Daryl was watching with interest and concern.

Shane sighed and pushed a hand back through his dark hair. “You get one free hit...”

“What?”

Shane shifted. “I was bein’ an asshole, so... For earlier. You get one punch—” His head snapped back and blood gushed from his nose. “OW! Fuck! What the fuck?!”

Daryl was watching with amusement and a somewhat satisfied look on his face. He gave you an admiring glance and shook his head, stopping just short of letting out a laugh.

“I’m not good at delayed gratification,” you said, watching Shane bend forward, blood still pouring off his face.

“I meant—” he pinched the bridge of his nose and straightened up, tipping his head back. “I meant in the arm or somethin’!”

“Hmm... Oh. Well, you should have been more specific. I’m not a mind reader. Next time you better lay out that kind of information up front.”

“Fuck,” he murmured again. “Next time??”

“Oh, yeah. I’m sure you’ll be an asshole again...”

Shane shot you a look and stalked away. And now Daryl did laugh. You looked over at him and shrugged. 

“What? He deserved it and it was his idea,” you said.

“No, he definitely deserved it,” Daryl drawled. “I’m just jealous I didn’t get to do it is all.” He laughed again, a sound that you loved dearly. He did it so rarely, and you made a mental note to make sure he did it more often. 

“You can do it next time. My treat,” you joked.

Daryl gave you a soft look and you felt butterflies flit to life in your stomach. “Have I ever told ya that yer my favorite?”

You felt your cheeks warm in a blush. “I don’t think so,” you laughed.

He ducked his head for a moment, suddenly nervous. “Well, s’true. Yer my favorite.”

Lydia was sitting next to Carol, watching the way you lit up laughter and Daryl’s expression warmed at just the sight of you. “They seem perfect,” Lydia said. Carol followed her gaze and caught sight of Daryl lazily pulling you in for a hug with his arms around your lower back when he thought no one was watching. He left a kiss in your hair. “They are,” Carol said. “But they went through a lot to get there. There was a time when I wasn’t sure they’d ever get together.” Lydia looked at her in surprise. “Really? What happened?” Carol sighed and smiled a little, glad that it was just all a memory now. “Y/N rejected him when he finally got up the courage to tell her how he felt.” Lydia looked shocked. “What? Really? She didn’t feel the same way?”

“No, she did... But it was because she was scared,” Carol explained, looking back over at you standing next to Daryl. The two of you were leaned up against a low wall and she could tell you were purposely positioned so your arm was still against his. “She was afraid that—that it would change how he made decisions, how he fought. She didn’t want him to put her before everyone else, including himself.” Lydia seemed to be on the edge of her seat. “What did he do?”

“Well, after being rejected by the only woman he ever loved, he did what we all expected him to do—he absolutely lost his shit. For a while.” Lydia gave Carol a questioning look. “He left. Lived way out of the walls by himself. He yelled at me if I tried to visit him. He was barely taking care of himself out there.” “But he came back?” Lydia asked, glancing back at you and Daryl. No one would ever know such a dark period had existed between the two of you.  Carol smiled again. “He did. Y/N is stubborn, but so is Daryl. Pretty quickly, Y/N realized that whether they were together or not, Daryl was going to put her first. Nothing was going to change that. He was already doing it. And she was in love with him... and some part of Daryl knew it.” Lydia sighed and watched as you leaned over and said something to Daryl that made him laugh in a way she’d rarely seen. “And he just—forgave her? I mean, she still broke his heart.” “She did. But then she put it back together. And he understood why she’d pushed him away once they’d had it out,” Carol said, raising an eyebrow. “And let me tell you, they had it out,” she laughed. “I think all of Alexandria heard that fight. And then—they were together, the way you’ve known them.” Lydia gave Carol a smile and looked back at you and Daryl again. “It—it’s nice to hear that some things turn out well in this world.” 

You’d barely heard the twig snap when he hit you from behind, but you weren’t ever one to go down easily in a fight. Despite the wind being knocked out of your lungs, you struggled to the best of your ability against the strong arms pressing you into the ground. You contemplated screaming but a hand suddenly clapped over your mouth and you had no breath anyway.  But you recognized the voice in your ear, speaking in hurried, gruff words. “The fuck ya think yer doin’?!” You stopped struggling instantly and looked up to see Daryl over you. Your brow furrowed heavily and he released you at the same moment you attempted to shake him off. “The fuck am I doing?! The fuck are you doing!? I warned you not to come back here and then you fucking knock the wind out of me?! Tackle me? What the fucking fuck?!”

He watched the hot flame of anger and disbelief whip up the color in your cheeks. “Ya think I didn’t know ya would head straight back this way to do somethin’ stupid?” he spat back.  Your jaw clenched. “I told you not to come back here!”

“Yeah, well, guess ‘m a bad listener,” he countered. “The hell ya think yer gonna do? Go in there and take down that entire outpost on yer own?! Huh? ya think ya got any chance of makin’ it out of there alive?” You looked away pointedly and he watched the muscle in your jaw tense again. “I don’t have time for this.” You attempted to stalk away but he blocked you with his broad-shouldered frame. “Tha’s just it, ain’t it? Ya dun wanna walk outta there alive? Ya think it’s worth somethin’ if ya go in there and take a couple of those assholes with ya? How many would be enough, huh? Three? Four?” “Get out of my way—” “Or maybe jus’ that one particular asshole? He’s in this camp, isn’t he?”

You tried to push past him again but he blocked you again, stopping you with a firm hand, his eyes narrowed perceptively. “Look me in the damn eyes and tell me ya expect to walk outta there afterwards!” he growled. You couldn’t. You avoided his gaze. “Tha’s what I fuckin’ thought.” He grabbed you by the arm and started tugging you through the brush in the opposite direction. “H—Hey!” You wrenched loose from his grip.”You’re a long fucking way from your people. I told you not to come back out here after the last time! Go mind your own fucking business and just keep out of mine!” He grabbed you by the shoulders and stopped you again. “This is my goddamn business!” And something on his face made you freeze still this time. “S’my business because I care about ya, okay?! I fuckin’—Jesus Christ, I give a shit about you! So, ya gotta stop! Look—I—I know ya think this is probably just cuz ya saved my life that time, but it ain’t. It’s somethin’ more. And I can’t even explain it to ya or give it a fuckin’ name or—shit—find the damn right words but I need you to—to not do this. Quit livin’ out here alone and pushin’ everybody away. Just come back with me righ’ now and ya can start over!”
