30. On a scale of 1-10, how dystopic/utopic is the setting (10 being utopia, 1 being utter dystopia)
Overall: if 2018 United States is a 3, then ATTWDC is a 6. if the Hunger Games is a 4, then ATTWDC is a 3.
by setting:
Aquarius: an 8-9 tbh? not perfect but like, doing pretty good
Helike: 6. better than Earth in general but itās also depressing as fuck
Darvaz: 7 if youāre human or otherwise lucky. 4 if youāre not.
Avalon: 4. Iād give it a 5-6 but punishments are SUPER DYSTOPIAN.
in general, you can probably avoid racism and sexism, and homophobia kind of on principle, but you also probably canāt vote (unless youāre on Avalon or Darvaz, and then youāre facing a host of other issues), you probably have to work for the government, and if you are any of the main characters of ATTWDC, you have a 100% hate the world youāre living in, albeit all for different reasons.

1. What areĀ the major powers (countries, kingdoms, tribes, etc.)?
There are four nations which coexist: Aquarius (of water), Darvaz (of fire), Helike (of shadow), and Avalon (of light). Technically each one only represents part of each overall elemental faction, but thatās mostly an academic distinction.
Darvaz and Aquarius are the strongest (Darvaz by the size of their empire, Aquarius by technological resources and political ties). They also have the most solidified governments, although their designs are incredibly different. Avalon has the mostĀ ālooseā government, being a pure democracy, while Helike is powerful but has a somewhat unstable core (since itās mostly run aristocratic families as opposed to a federal state).
Darvaz, Aquarius, and Helike were all founded around the same time (late BC), while Avalon joined about two centuries later. Ironically, Avalon is chastised by some as being too old-fashioned, as theyāre the only ones who maintain their old systems of law and justice.
During ATTWDC, Helike and Darvaz are allied, Aquarius is in prolonged neutrality (think Switzerland), and Avalon has been militaristically strong-armed by Helike into non-interference. Helikeās ruler is Triste; Aquariusā queen is Diana; Darvazās emperor doesnāt have a name yet but Iām getting on it.
During the time period of my {apprentices WIP}, Aquarius and Helike are politically friendly, Avalon and Aquarius are allied, and Darvaz is just chilling. Helikeās ruler is Rajani; Aquariusā queen is Anne; Darvazās emperor is another person who doesnāt have a name yet because whoops.
Darvaz (Derweze, «درŁŲ§Ų²ŁĀ») also known as The Gates of Hells. Turkmenistan.
My latest work. It's a drone/dark ambient track. Here's the story behind the name: "Turkmenistan's aptly named Door to Hell, a 230-foot-wide crater in the middle of the desert near the village of Deweze. In 1971, a team of Soviet scientists set up a drilling platform looking for natural gas reserves. The rig collapsed, and fearing the spread of poisonous methane gas, the researchers set the crater on fire hoping it would burn out in a few hours. That was more than 40 years ago." - The Huffington Post

Derweze/Darvaz, commonly called the Door to hell, is located in Turkmenistan. It was a natural gas drilling location until itĀ collapsed. Geologist thought that if they set it on fire it would burn up the toxic fumes in a matter of days, but it is still burning today.Ā
The seventh episode of the show, which was first uploaded September 7th, 2008. Here are some relevant links, as is our way.

Lake Nyos has kind of been āfixedā since that incident I mentioned, but I didnāt think itād be too funny to mention in the episode?
My remark about the fish aside, the local wildlife have actually adapated to the acidic waters of Karymsky (and itās siblings) rather well.

The Door to Hell, is situated near the small town of Darvaz in Turkmenistan.Ā Thirty-five years ago, geologists were drilling for gas when then encountered a very large cavern underground filled with a poisonous gas.Ā They ignited the gas expecting it to burn off in a few hours.Ā The gas is still burning to this day. Its 60 meters in diameter and 20 meters depth have not been caused by volcanic activity or a meteorite impact. This crater was created sometime in the 50ās when the Soviets were prospecting for natural gas in this area and itās been burning since then.
