y'all mind if i act insane over a second-long clip?
so i'm gathering clips to use in a WUDM fanvid, and this little moment at the start jumped out at me
now, it could mean nothing. Nat and Vera have both been regulars at the church for years, presumably Darla was part of the inner circle (or at least adjacent to it) before she divorced Nat. it makes sense she and Vera would know each other and be at least friendly, if not actual friends.
but fuck it, i'm gonna speculate.
what if Vera and Darla were friends? what if, in that congregation that never appreciated or understood her, Vera did have one ally, who is now gone - for her own good, certainly, but gone nonetheless? i've seen people point out that, while Nat clearly thinks the divorce came out of nowhere, Darla picked up and left him, taking their children with her, and moved across the country. not the sort of thing someone can do without months of prep work and planning. what if Vera knew Darla was unhappy, maybe even knew some dirty secrets about the Sharps' marriage, but never told anyone because Darla asked her not to, and besides, they both knew the church would always side with Nat. always blame Darla. what if Vera knew Darla was planning to leave? maybe she even helped her - Vera's a lawyer, she could help Darla find resources to make a clean break, maintain custody of her children, get settled somewhere new.
like. just imagine how Darla leaving would've felt for Vera. relief that Darla's finally getting to start over, mixed with sadness at seeing her friend go, maybe even with some resentment that now she was basically on her own among the flock.
what if Vera saw Darla do what she felt she couldn't before the events of the movie? what if she didn't see Darla abandon her husband, but saw that she got away?
