Path of Exile Closed Beta Spoilers: Kaom’s Path
Okay, let's talk about Kaom's areas. The rest of Act 4 is freaking phenomenal. The Dried Lake is haunting, Voll's confession is heartbreaking. The Aqueduct is spooky as hell. Highgate is beautiful. The Mines and Crystal Veins are horrifying and Silent Hill-esque. Daresso's path is currently the crown jewel of the act, with great flavor, clever enemy design, loads of lore, and most importantly, a look into Daresso's life--which we hear from his own mouth. That's important. We get this great look at a character's history from his own perspective. This happens with Voll, too--Voll's confession provides an emotionally dense look into his dying days, and learning that he, in spite of whether the rest of his reign was good or bad, fell trying to save Wraeclast from the Beast? Heartbreaking. None of this happens with Kaom. We have some speculation from the residents of Highgate about what happened to him, and some environmental lore in Act 1 from his followers' perspectives, but we never get to see what Kaom thinks of himself. Kaom's Path has interesting enemies, but zero lore. All Kaom does is say "ANOTHER HEAD FOR MY BELT" and "HYRRI, THIS GUY'S KICKING MY ASS, HELP." (On a side note, learning that Hyrri rhymes with "Kairi" instead of "eerie" was a mental double-take moment up there with learning that not only does Vaal not rhyme with "veil", but Vaal and Voll are pronounced exactly the same.) It's completely possible that GGG are already working on this and simply haven't released it yet, but the rest of Act 4 is so amazing that the relative (I mean that, it's still pretty good) mediocrity of Kaom's path is jarring as hell. Daresso's path is exciting and enjoyable; Kaom's path is a slog.
