Zhangye Danxia landform, also known as the "Rainbow Mountains" or “the eye candy of Zhangye”, is a unique type of petrographic geomorphology found in China. This attractive landform is formed from red-colored sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age. Some geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by the folding of layered oceanic crust. Danxia landform spreads across an area of 300 to 510 square kilometers. This landform received protection from the UNESCO Heritage Site in 2009.
