If you want a creative life, do what you can't and experience the beauty of the mistakes you make.
Daniel H. Pink, A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule The Future
Reading for the Literate: FIVE BOOKS for Reading When You Have the Time
OFFICIAL POST NUMBER ONE!
5. Falling Up: This is Shel Silverstein GOLD and if you have not read this for any reason, (including "I don't like poetry") go read it. This collection of humorous poems will put you in a mood, and odds are you will be more creative. Creativity actually stems from the process of reflection after a new experience, and cliche though this may be, Falling Up is an excellent place to start. In fact, I almost called this blog Falling Up, but then I realized there would probably be some copyright infringement problems or something.
4. Siddhartha: If you try telling me this book is against your religion, please move to Antarctica, and do me the favor of never returning. Siddhartha is not a religious book. Ok, I lied, it is a little bit. But if you think that is the entire point of the book, I encourage you to give it another read, because you are wrong. I think you will find I don't often flat out tell people they are incorrect, but this is one of those special situations where I think it is justified.
3. A Whole New Mind: This is especially excellent if you are a fellow right-brainer. This book tells of how we are taking over humanity and why, but in a less panic inducing for the less creative kind of way. Unlike accountants, creative people cannot be replaced by computers, therefore creative people are becoming more valuable, and will be more likely to obtain and keep jobs. Fear not, less creative left-brainers, Pink (yes, the last name of the author is Pink) also gives tips on brainstorming and outside-the-box thinking.
2. Ignore Everybody and 39 Other Keys to Creativity: Life changing and hilarious and I'm not even kidding you. Hugh MacLeod's 159-pager ticks off the 40 keys in readable, relatable, and laughably sarcasm-infused jargon with hysterical illustration interludes. I mean, it's not like I have this list of tips on my wall, or "follow the steps" every time I want to have a creative thought. These "Keys" are not even tips, tricks, or steps; they are more along the lines of facts related to creativity and life, followed by his insights. What you end up with is a new way to look at creative thinking, and a new insight on how others view creative thinking. What I came away with was new knowledge and new views that helped me to be slightly more creative. And also a knack for ignoring everybody.

1. The Architecture of Happiness: This book is the absolute bomb-diggity. Yeah, I did just use that in an actual sentence, so please stop judging me. I have done it before, I will do it again. Now: One of the most important things in this life is understanding what contributes to who you are as a person. It helps you increase the inward flow of good stuff, and helps block out the bad stuff. At least it works that way for me. The Architecture of Happiness explores the psychological impact of one of the most under-appreciated factors in our emotional well-being: buildings. Environments in general, yes, but the buildings! Houses that may or may not be homes, the amount of light or lack thereof in work place, how an arch versus a doorway can make us feel permeant or merely transitory, regardless of the fact that they perform the same basic function. The places you choose to inhabit and spend time say quite a bit about you, but you also are reflective of them. We inform architecture, architecture informs us. This is my favorite book. Ever. The end. And usually I have a lot of trouble picking just one as my favorite of anything.
