I remember finding this after seeing the film and thought it was one of the better articles about it. The biggest question for me was "What is Freddy Quell? How do you define him? What are his needs? Is it coincidence that the man he fights with in the department store looks similar to Dodd?"
I've always thought of it as the last of the post-modern masterpieces as we now head into that movement's response.
I think we go to films looking to find a part of us. What Paul Thomas Anderson has done is craft a film where we can't find it. Any chance of understanding is edited and acted into incomprehension. We are left with a film that does not reflect but shows us what is.
For the most part, developing and maintaining a working blog at audiodesignstudios.com seems like a bridge too far while so much is in development so for now I will take advantage of the many excellent blogging sites available. At some point this will all be taken over to the site but for now its function and the blog’s function can be separated.
There is an attempt to discriminate and separate the ‘I’ from this space, not only because this is a representation of a company but I also wish to generate dialogue rather than pontificate.
I have found in my reading of technology and film criticism that the writing I enjoy reading most does not make a direct value judgment (though it exists); rather there is an obvious attempt to merely generate a response. Sometimes common judgments are reached, but mostly the discussions take place and what is left are several discourses (all being correct) rather than the single narrative of the original author.
Perhaps the internet is the greatest gift of post-modernism, or at least the greatest tool for exploiting its ideals.
Why tumblr.?
tumblr. was chosen based on shallow reasoning – I find its design and visual functioning much more appealing than other editors.
Why now?
Moving to Manhattan has brought about a large personality change; I have gone from being someone who says very little to being the person who talks over the top of other people in conversation. My natural instinct would be to shy away from this leap in extremities and I am sure in time I will develop balance.
For now I am enjoying not only having something to say but also wanting to say it.
