I'm glad I don't read those books any more

Not that I read them to begin with. 

Those pages were planted in my mouth

And I, with fierce direction, pulled them from my teeth

No gardening was necessary

There was no yard to start with. 

The grass was painted on the hot concrete

And I, with wet pores breathing for the first time,

Don't run so far that you can't see your house in the distance

His wound will not bleed in you

Her flowers will not make you beautiful

Be back before it's dark

before the sun goes down

Black like a crow on a fence

Tanned like a leather case

Musty like an attic heirloom 

Brown like a wet stone pulled from the river bed

Limbs like a walnut tree 

Gait like a limber horse 

Grounded like a flightless bird
