Washington would be lying if he said the worries of the man before him were not also his own. Unless there would be some treacherous turn in the negotiations they would soon have freed themselves from the British Empire. If this freedom would do them any good was yet to be proved. He saw no clear path and knew not where he wanted the road to lead, he knew only that from now on they walked uncharted territory. Seeing as this uncertain answer may further sadden his companion, who he wished to console, Washington chose instead to say, “This will indeed need some adjustment. Our young nation has still to grow into the country we dream of, and that will take both time and our collective efforts. I believe that we can soon leave the fighting for our land behind and focus on the task before us.”

A smile of many meanings graced his lips as he thought of the war finally ending. For his part it felt like it had gone on longer than the official fighting, since he had, as many others, stayed to serve in case the war would resume. “We are safe now and in the capable hands of our countrymen.”

They practically already are a couple, so they don’t count.
