For pride month I would like to recommend this documentary that is specifically about the lives of transmasc/lesbian/butch adjacent queer POC, I particularly wanted to suggest this since transmascs experience so much erasure and I haven’t seen a lot of historical footage of queer people who are a whole lot like myself in terms of queer identity.

Like the Letterboxd description says, it’s a documentary following the day to day lives and personal reflection of several (trans)masc/trans man and lesbian adjacent queer people of color in the late 1990s-early 2000s and explores their unique relationships with gender and sexuality. There are a lot of scenes featuring ballroom culture as well.

I had never heard of it til the other day despite being someone who actively seeks out queer films, so I figured there’s probably more people who have never heard of it who would enjoy it. I watched it for free on Tubi.

It’s the type of documentary film where it doesn’t really seem to have a specific message or anything it’s trying to convince you of, it’s just kind of neutrally capturing overviews of the lives of the featured people. There isn’t a lot of narration or interjection from the crew of the film, it’s mostly just letting the people it’s about speak for themselves (as well as their loved ones talking about their experiences too). And maybe being stoned while watching it helped, but I thought the cinematography was nice and there was something almost dreamy about it at times.

I recommend this for anyone who wants to learn more about queer history (specifically the subsection of transmasc/ftm/butch/lesbian history), especially those of y’all that love documentaries.
