Prompt: Dan decides to come out to YouTube. You, being the nicest boyfriend ever, decides to help him with the shooting of the video. People see your head in a little part of his coming out video and rumors, as well as drama, ensues. 

Warnings: Swearing and hate (towards reader when the fans figure out it’s you)

Authors Note: This prompt had been on my mind for awhile and I just now decided to write it out as an imagine.

You helped Dan as he set up his set for his new video. You were so happy for that he was coming out to his fans and just everyone else, who didn’t know his personal life, in general on the internet. You had known that he had wanted to come out for awhile but wanted to wait for the right moment. That’s when you suggested he do it during Pride month. He had agreed and here you both were setting up the black background and the big ring light that was always set right beside his camera. 

Now who are you exactly? Let’s go back to the day you and Dan met. It was during Vidcon and you were a fairly known Youtuber and you had a panel right before Dan. You had been done with your panel and meeting fans when you had run into Dan.  

“I’m s- omigod you’re Dan Howell.” You blurted out without realizing it. You had to admit that you were fan of Dan and actually meeting him left you speechless. He chuckled, helping you pick your stuff, as well as you helping him pick up his stuff. He didn’t say anything until everything was back to their rightful owner. 

“And you’re Y/N L/N. I’m quite a fan of you and your prank videos.” Dan said, holding his hand out to shake yours. You shook it and replied, “Me too- I mean, I’m a fan of you and your videos as well.” You said, correcting yourself. He nodded and was about to speak again when Phil gestured to him to tell him that they were about to be up. 

“Do you mind if I ask for your number? You know, just in case we don’t see each other after Phil and I’s panel.” Dan asked, quickly, sounding quite nervous while saying it. You nodded and wrote down your number on a piece of paper and handed it to him, waving goodbye as he rushed to the entrance of where the panel was being held. 

After that, Dan had texted you and you two hung out for the longest time before he had the courage to come out to you and ask you out. He was a nervous wreck before you told you as well. You had been out for awhile so he wasn’t worried about you not accepting him, he was worried that you might’ve rejected him when he asked you out. And now here the two of you were.

“Okay, Y/N, I think everything is perfect. Now get out of the frame before I have to come out to the whole world about two things before I’m ready about one of them.” He joked, but not really, pushing you playfully out of the frame of the camera. You giggled and got behind the camera pointing to him when it was recording. 

You heard a sigh come from him and then his famous “Hello, internet.” Dan was coming out of the closet. 

You knew that Dan had wanted the video to be a long one and he had warned you about bringing something to occupy yourself and something to eat and drink. You had listened to him about bringing something to occupy yourself, but not the food and drink part. So about an hour into the video, you were hungry. 

Now, to get from your spot to the kitchen it would mean you would have to walk past the camera. So you thought about doing the one thing any logical person would do: crouch down and walk over until you’re out of sight from the camera. Dan didn’t notice what you were doing until you were already walking and he got distracted for a second. 

“You could’ve told me you were hungry and I could have stopped this so you’d be able to walk past.” He said, chuckling, as he watched you, still crouched down on the floor. You shrugged and walked into the kitchen after mumbling; “What’s the fun in that?” He just shook his head and continued on talking, reminding himself to make sure you weren’t in the frame and to cut the part of him being distracted by you. 

By the time he was done and editing, he had forgotten to look for you in the frame and hadn’t noticed that a little part of your head could be seen for about three seconds before Dan had cut the part of him talking to you. The next day, the video was uploaded and that’s when everything took a turn for the good and for the worse. 

You were scrolling through twitter, reading all of the tweets about Dan’s video when you came across one that almost made you spill your drink all over yourself and your laptop. ‘@fansusername: did anyone else see @y/t/n in Dan’s video at 7:40? I swear that’s his head and not Phil’s for many reasons.’ Attached with the tweet was a few second clip of Dan’s video where you could clearly see a part of your head and no one could mistake your hair color with Phil’s. You tried to think of why people automatically assumed it’s you. There are tons of people out there with same color as you, just because you had that hair color doesn’t mean it’s you, right? As you kept on scrolling, more and more people were tweeting about you popping up. Freaked out, you rushed over to Dan, almost bumping into him as he was making himself some coffee. Dan turned around, his hands up.

“Woah there, where’s the fire?” He joked, his smile turning into a frown when he noticed your panicked expression. “What happened?” He asked in a rushed tone, leading you back to the couch so you both could sit down and talk about it. You pointed to your laptop, silently, and he picked it up, turning it back on. He read some of the tweets, a silent laugh appearing on his face. “That’s what you’re so worried about? People know we’re friends and I left that bit in there on purpose. No one will suspect anything except that you were just goofing around.” Dan said after awhile of reading the tweets. 

You shook your head, pointing to some of the ones he hadn’t read. “Really? Doesn’t seem to me like they think we’re ‘just friends,’ Dan. I was in your coming out video for fucks sake! Everyone knows I’m gay and you coming out just further proves to the fans that we’re dating. Did you read any of the hate comments as well? There’s some pretty nasty ones.” You said, taking your laptop back to show him the ones you were talking about. “Ooh, how about this one? ‘Dan and y/n are together? I actually preferred it when everyone was shipping Phan.’ Or; ‘Y/n really? I wouldn’t peg someone like Dan to go out with someone who dresses the way y/n does and still says he’s a guy and is gay.’ There’s plenty more-”

You were then cut off by Dan’s lips being pressed onto your own. You knew it was his favorite way to shut you up, and most of the time you didn’t mind it, but not this time. You still wanted to speak your mind about the whole situation. You pulled back, quickly getting up. 

“We have to do something about this.”

She had never been one, to let her heart lead the way. She had never been one to let her heart open up for someone. And then, came the day where she met Dan. He reminded her of herself. It was love at first sight.

Dan had never thought in a million years, that he'd find a soul, that fit perfectly with his. He had fallen for her eyes, the minute they met with his. For him, she was perfection, an angel fallen from the sky.

Of course, their relationship wasn't easy. With the both of them on antidepressive medication, both of them scared they weren't good enough, took a toll on their relationship. Fights weren't unusual, being a near daily thing. Both of them had thought about ending the relationship, but never really had the willpower to do it. They were each others other half.

As her depression got worse, Dan was there every day, every hour, taking care of her, helping her in every way that he could. Ofcourse, she had trouble letting him do it, never used to someone caring for her in that way. It took it's toll on Dan, seeing her like that. Most days she didn't even get out of bed.

The weeks passed, no sign of her getting better. In fact, it went the other way. She had lost her will to live. Dan was scared to leave her alone, but it was impossible, to not leave her side. He had to get food, and get out of the house sometimes.

The day Dan came home, with her nowhere to be seen, was the day his whole world broke down. He had found a note on the little table where he always put his keys. He quickly opened up the letter, and as he read her words, the tears slowly started rolling down his cheeks. All he could think was no. She had ended it. Not their relationship, but her life.

As he was sitting in a chair, completely broken down, he got a call. He didn't want to answer, knowing what was coming. He forced himself to answer the phone. He said hello with a broken voice. The lady on the other end, quickly asked him to come to the hospital. She didn't have much time left.

Walking through the hospital doors, he nearly broke down again. It had finally hit him, this was real, he was losing her.

[Y/N] had never been this nervous. Usually she wasn’t so nervous to go to a YouTuber convention, but now, things were different. Dan and Phil would be at the convention too, and she would even be on the same panel as them, along with Louise, to talk about the effect of internet on people’s mental health. [Y/N] happened to be quit the expert on the subject, since she isn’t always her very best. But since she had met Dan … [Y/N] had been texting and talking to Dan online for over half a year now. They had come in contact through Twitter, when Dan had tweeted her about a video of her, and it turned out that they had a lot in common. But they hadn’t had the chance to meet in person, until today. Dan made [Y/N] feel wanted, understood and not alone anymore. Finally she had found someone that had the same sense of humor, was just as dark as her sometimes, and someone that would listen to her. They were on the exact same level, and it kinda scared [Y/N] at first. She never had experienced something like that. It just felt right. And now, she was standing in front of the building, where Dan would be inside. How would it be to finally see him? Finally talk to him in real life? She was afraid to lose him, afraid that he would think she wasn’t how he had imagined her to be in real life. She didn’t want to lose him. That was her biggest fear : to lose him. Because half a year doesn’t seem to be a long time, but it’s long enough for [Y/N] to feel so much for Dan. She wasn’t sure what she felt, but it sure was something. On the days they didn’t talk, [Y/N] felt empty, like she had been dropped into a dark hole. Yes, they did have silent arguments sometimes, where they just didn’t talk, but eventually they always started to talk again, opened up a bit more to each other, and then they pulled each other back out of the hole, into the light. [Y/N] took one last deep breath, and then started to walk towards the backstage entrance. She showed the security her badge, and they let her inside. She immediately was greeted by a women with a clipboard, who smiled to bride and obviously was very tired. She led [Y/N] towards the panel she is co-hosting, towards Dan. She took out her phone, and smiled when she saw that she had a message from Dan. That’s just the effect one stupid text had on her. [b]Dan :[/b] i can’t believe i’m finally going to meet you !! i’m so nervous but also very happy and excited. hope i won’t have to puke

Y/N POV

I didn’t go to school the next day. My paper wasn’t done, and it’s not like I would be able to concentrate during my classes. I couldn’t stop thinking about everything that had happened between my first day in London and now. I don’t really know where to go from here.  

It’s been another two weeks since Dan and I have talked. I’ve called him countless times, starting from the morning after our kiss, but he hasn’t picked up. I’ve left a voicemail with every single call. I told him that I was stupid, and that I was sorry, and that he has all the reason to be mad at me. I poured all of my thoughts and regrets into those messages, but I have a feeling he hasn’t bothered to listen to any of them. I’ve still kept in touch with Phil. He has been so sweet and helpful through this, and he knows that just getting my mind off of it is what I need now. I feel sick and tired all the time, and I absolutely hate it. 

It’s only 9:30 pm, and I’ve finished my homework for tonight. I sigh, and pick up the phone to call Dan once again. 

Dan’s POV

Who knew my bedroom could get so cold?

As I see the time, I count 10 hours now that I’ve been in my dark room, with my duvet wrapped around my hunched shoulders. The pain hasn’t subsided, just shifted in a way. It’s gone from anger, to regret, to sadness, to all three at the same time. But the thought of Y/N still plagues my mind like a sickness that has no cure. I think about many situations that have occurred involving her: when I first met her at my doorstep and was struck by her beauty, when she cut her hand open and I helped her, when we bonded through video games and deep conversations, and worst of all, the night of our fight. 

Another London siren is heard, and it seems to have pulled up at our building. I wonder who was hurt, but I wasn’t curious enough to stop thinking about Y/N.

I hear a soft knock at my door, followed by a, “Dan? You can’t not answer, I know you’re in there.”  I sigh in the discomfort of being forced into human interaction, when all I want to do is think about Y/N. “Come in,” I muttered distastefully. Phil walks in carefully, holding a cup of tea and... popcorn. Great, now I am re-reminded of Y/N, and the worst night of my entire life. 

“I brought snacks,” Phil sat down beside me. “I’m not hungry,” I say flatly. I don’t face him and continue to stare straight forward. “Dan,” Phil chides me. “You haven’t eaten in two and a half days, you’re going to fall ill!”  “I’m good with that,” I feel exhausted. Y/N.

Phil’s POV

It really hurt to see Dan this way, and Y/N as well. They both feel terrible without each other. I made it my mission to play matchmaker, but I was getting slightly tired of Dan’s attitude. There was only one thing left to do. Snap.

I set down the tea and popcorn angrily on the foot of Dan’s bed. “Dan!” I jump up. He looks at me with such surprise, that he bothers to fix his fringe with his fingertips, something he hasn’t bothered to do in weeks. “You need to get out of this! Obviously, you’re miserable without Y/N, and I can promise you she misses you just as much!”  He scoffed at my statement. “I find that hard to believe, considering she was the one who hesitated.”  “Yeah, well you haven’t talked to her these past few days, and I have! Do you know how bad she feels?! She regrets it so much, she told me her grades have been dropping because she can’t concentrate, and she has a fever. She is actually sick! Haven’t you listened to any of her voice mails?!”

Dan looks up at me quizzically. “What voice mails? I’ve shut my phone off...” I don’t wait for him to finish as I grab his phone for the opposite side of the room and throw it at him. “Just listen to her,” I say before walking out of the room and shutting the door behind me.

Dan’s POV

Shocked. That’s all I am right now. Hesitantly, I grab my phone to see the endless notifications, all from Y/N. I swallow, press the first voicemail she left, and hold the phone up to my ear. 

“Hello, Dan... Assuming you’ve deleted my contact, it’s Y/N.”  Oh my goodness, she sounds so broken, and her voice is barely above a whisper. “Umm... I just wanted to apologize for what I said. I... I really do love you. I don’t know why I said I needed to think about it, I don’t. I guess I was just scared that we wouldn’t be able to be together when I go back to America, but I now realize that we cross that bridge when we get there. I get why you’re mad, and I don’t blame you. Just... please call back.” 

 A tear rolls down my face, and I listen to all of the messages. I finally get to the most recent one, which was today. It must have been when Phil and I were talking. My hands shaking, I press on it. “It’s Y/N,” she sounds so emotionless and drained now causing more tears to roll down my face. “I realize that if you’re listening to this, you’ve probably heard the others, and that’s my message. I don’t know what else to say-” her voice breaks off into a stifled sob and a hiccup. “I... I don’t blame you for hating me, I hate me too.”

No, no, no. I threw down my phone and jumped up to find a change of clothes. The thought of sweet, beautiful, smart Y/N hating herself motivated me with an spurt of energy that I didn’t know I possessed. I threw open my door and ran out of the flat. Phil was waiting outside my door, and didn’t seem at all surprised. 

I swung myself down the stairs to Y/N’s floor. I stumbled as I came to a stop, heaving. But it wasn’t the running that left me breathless, it was the sight in front of me. Y/N’s door was wide open, paramedics rushing in and out of her flat. A girl about my age stood by the door, crying into a tissue. Two paramedics tried to calm her down. I recognized her. She is Y/N’s best friend from America, I’d seen her in pictures. As I tiptoe closer, I see Y/N passed out on a cot, being carried down the stairs. She wasn’t bleeding, thank goodness, but she wasn’t awake either. Everything moved in slow motion, the outside world becoming a blur. Then it hit me.

Y/N POV

To put it nicely, the plane ride was absolute hell. Of course, I’m excited to be studying a semester abroad, and in London of all places! I’ve wanted to go to Europe ever since I was a child, and a whole semester?! Amazing!

But the plane ride was absolute hell. As I lived in California, the flight was over 12 hours. That’s long to begin with. And of course, I had the pleasure of sitting next to an overweight man who drank when he was awake and drooled when he was asleep. Thank goodness I had the window seat. 

I finally arrived in London, getting off as quickly as possible (for obvious reasons). Luckily, the school rented an apartment out for me, and it turned out to be very nice. I was up a couple flights of stairs, and the size of the apartment was perfect for me! I wanted to get as much done on the first day as possible, so I quickly began unpacking, starting with the kitchen stuff. 

I was about 20 minutes into unpacking when I heard shouting one floor above me. It was muffled, so I couldn’t make out what was being said. Probably some couple. However, not 5 minutes later, I heard more yelling from two similar voices. I really wanted to ignore it, but they kept yelling for over an hour, and I was really just done. Setting down the box I was unloading, I climbed another set of stairs and found the apartment.

I rapped my knuckles quickly against the door. The shouting instantly stopped, and I heard footsteps pad towards the door. A tall man answered the door. He had a black fringe, and extremely pale skin. His eyes were a bright blueish green. “Hello,” he said nicely. “May I help you?”

I had originally planned on being really rude and upfront, but this man seemed so nice, I couldn’t. “Oh,” I stuttered. “Well, I just moved in a floor below here, and I heard you guys shouting, and well... I was just wondering if you could maybe just keep it down a bit? I’m just trying to get settled in...” I felt so bad, especially when he responded, “Oh, I’m so sorry! We were gaming and kind of got carried away. I’m Phil, by the way,” he stuck out his hand, and I shook it. “Nice to meet you Phil, I’m Y/N.”

As Phil and I exchanged names, another man walked up beside Phil, and oh damn. He was tall as well, with a fringe opposite Phil’s, and brown. His eyes were also brown. My stomach went into knots. “Hello,” this new person said. “Dan, she’s asked us to keep the noise level down as she is moving in below.” 

“Oh!” Dan said, as he stuck out his hand. “So sorry...?” “Y/N,” I finish for him, taking his hand. Our eyes meet, and we hold each other’s gaze for a bit. Phil cleared his throat. “Anyways, Y/N, as an ‘I’m sorry,’ do you want us to help you unpack?” I look back to Phil and answer, “Actually, you could tell me where the nearest cafe is? I’m quite hungry and thirsty.”

“Oh,” Dan jumped in quickly. “You can just eat here. We ordered a pizza a few minutes before you got here.” I was taken aback by the generosity, but gratefully accepted. They showed me in, and gave me a quick tour. I quickly grew to feel at home. Our pizza arrived shortly afterwords. 

“So,” Dan asked between mouthfuls. “You sound like you’re from America, what brings you to the land of tea and corgis?” I laugh and respond, “I’m doing school abroad for a little while.”  

For the rest of the night, we talk, eat, and laugh. I love hanging out with the both of them, especially Dan. I can’t help but feel butterflies every time Dan looks at me, which seemed to be quite often. I eventually realize the time. “Oh, it’s getting late. I should head back to my apartment.” I stand up to leave, and give my goodbyes. The three of us planned to hang out here again tomorrow once I finished moving in, so we exchanged phone numbers. 

As I walked towards the door, Dan came to my side to open the door for me. He smiled at me, and I smiled back. “It was great to meet you, Y/N,” he said softly. “You too, Dan.” To my pleasant surprise, he bent down to give me a hug, which I accepted. I took in his sweet scent, but then he pulled apart after a few seconds, as the hug was becoming longer than normal hugs should probably last. I stepped out the door, and down to my own apartment.

 Most people didn’t think it, but the relate-able meme, everyone loved didn’t always have good days. He wasn’t always happy, or full of life like they saw on youtube. He fell apart and struggled to get through the day. The last two months had been pure hell for him, he still tried to upload videos, but life felt like a constant existential crisis. He was falling apart. On the best days he was just okay, maybe he wouldn’t scream or cry and he was able to film. What was it about him that wasn’t good enough? He had tried so hard to be everything, he tried to be the person his subscribers wanted him to be, the person his friends wanted him to be and the person he had wanted to be for her. Hell, he loved her. He loved her more than life itself, but it didn’t change a thing. She left. He spent weeks, months even laying in bed staring at the ceiling, or laying on the carpet wondering what went wrong. Maybe he wasn’t athletic enough. Maybe he was too sarcastic, or his sense of humor was too dark. Was he not able to satisfy her sexually? Did she not find him attractive enough? Did he not smile enough? Was he too depressing? Was it because of his existential crisis’s? Was his laugh too weird? Did he spend too much time on tumblr? Did he not spend enough time with her? Was it his subscribers? No it couldn’t be. They loved her. They could possibly love her more than they loved him. They were shipped as much as Phan. Youtube? Couldn’t be could it? She was always so supportive. Was it because of Phil? No he couldn’t believe that. Y/n and Phil were close. They were like brother and sister. They always pranked him together. He just couldn’t understand and it felt like it was eating away at him. What was so wrong with him that she had to end it? They had spent two years and 4 months together and they were amazing, at least he thought they were. The same day he was going to ask her to move in with him and Phil, was the day she broke it off. He could remember it so vividly. They had both wanted to talk about something, both had urged the other to speak first before she had given in, she was going to speak first. He could remember the feeling of nerves and excitement bubbling into his stomach, until it dropped at her words. “Dan, I’m so sorry, but I can’t do this anymore. I’m breaking up with you.” He should have went first. He felt a sinking feeling in his stomach just thinking about it. It was hard for Phil to watch. This was his best friend, they had grown up together these last few years and he didn’t know how to live without him anymore. Yet, he had to. Dan wasn’t really there. His body and physical being was there, but the soul wasn’t. When Y/n left it was as though Dan lost a part of himself. In a way Phil understood, Y/n had been a huge part of their lives for years, even before Dan started dating her she was their friend. She was a constant in their life and one of their biggest supporters. They both loved her, in different ways, but it was still love. She completed them. It broke Phil’s heart to see Dan like this. He wanted to do something, but he knew the only thing that could fix Dan was Y/n. Whether it was some type of closure that he needed or what, Phil didn’t know, but he knew that only Y/n could give it to him. He just wanted Dan back. He didn’t want Dan to be back temporarily, or for a few days or weeks before another existential crisis. He wanted Dan back for good.  Y/n hadn’t communicated with either of them since she left, but Phil had heard from Louise that Y/n was still having a hard time too. Taking one last glance into Dan’s room at the figure laying under the covers staring at the ceiling, Phil grabbed his coat and headed out the door. He had to do something. Y/n had taken the week off from work. She needed a break of some sort. Despite how she was feeling and the need to drown herself in work to forget her problems, she knew that it wasn’t healthy. No matter how she distracted herself, she wouldn’t be able to forget and it wouldn’t heal her heart. These distractions were just temporary and no matter how much she loved working as a (Y/D/J), recently she knew her heart wasn’t completely into it. She had her good days and her bad. She hadn’t been able check her social media in fear of seeing something about Dan, or have her heartbroken from whatever the Phandom might say. No matter how strong she was, she wasn’t strong enough to do that yet. Maybe later, eventually when she didn’t love him as much as she did right now. She had spent so much time distracting herself and only taking short periods of time to cry that she realized she hadn’t really given herself time to grieve the relationship. She had dedicated so much time to him, and she loved him. She had trouble expressing her emotions, specifically the ones that hurt and because of that she hid them. She tried to fill herself with so much that she couldn’t think about anything, but work. It was her way of coping. That is what led her to where she was right now. Y/n sat on her couch, curled up with her (y/h/c) hair in a messy bun, lazy clothes on and  a tube of ice cream in her hands. It was every females way of dealing with heartache. A rapid set of knocks on her flat door snapped her attention away from her laptop that was playing one of Zoella’s haul videos. With a sigh, she set her ice cream down and headed to her door. She hadn’t told anyone she wasn’t going to be at work, therefore no one had a reason to stop by. Opening the door, she stares at the black haired, blue eyed boy in shock. “Phil? What are you doing here?” Her heart seemed to beat 10 times faster as she glanced behind him to make sure Dan wasn’t hidden somewhere. “Don’t worry its just me. We need to talk.” Y/n couldn’t help, but feel embarrassed at being caught. She nods her head at Phil, signaling for him to come in and she closes the door behind him. She doesn’t bother to wait for him as he already knows his way around and heads back to her seat. At first neither of them seem to say anything as they sat side by side. Maybe it is because they missed each other’s presence, or they were waiting for the other person to speak or maybe they couldn’t find the right words. “How are you doing?” The words tumbled out of Phil’s mouth before he could stop them. Of course she wasn’t doing okay, she was eating ice cream! Her favourite kind to eat when she was sad. “I’m fine.” Y/n appreciated the fact that he was worried, but she also felt it wasn’t fair to bring him in the middle of things. “Dan’s not.” Phil seemed to just blurt it out and he wanted Y/n wince. “What do you mean he isn’t? Did something happen?” Her worry for Dan made his heart swell and it gave him hope. Maybe she still loved Dan and maybe he could fix this. “The break up. He isn’t handling it well.” Y/n didn’t know what she was suppose to say to that. Was she suppose to apologize? Ignore her heart and act indifferent? Why did a small part of her ache to run to Dan? She didn’t want to admit she missed Dan’s soft brown hair and how he always tried to straighten it, despite how much she loved it hobbit style. She missed his amazing eyes and the smile the could melt the coldest hearts. She missed his tall figure and the teasing that came along with their height difference. “Oh.” Phil knew her well enough to see the inner battle going on in her head and heart. “I wouldn’t have come to you if it wasn’t important. I don’t know why you two ended, but please come see him. Talk to him, give him closure or whatever it is that needs to be done between the two of you. I love you both and you’re miserable.” Y/n could hear the sadness in Phil’s voice and it caused guilt to wrench within her. She caused this. Not only did she hurt Dan, but she hurt Phil. Phil was not a sad person. He was a ray of sunshine and it was hard seeing and hearing him sad. “I don’t know what I could possibly do.” She didn’t understand how she could fix anything. What could she possibly do? She doubted Dan would want to see her anyway. He was too nice to throw her out, but he wouldn’t want to see her. “Please. Please Y/n. You both need this. I need my best friends back.” She could see Phil’s blue eyes water and her heart sunk. “Okay. Okay.” She nodded her head with her words as Phil threw his arms around her. “ Thank you.” Without another word, he released her and stood up, dragging her to the door and grabbing her stuff. He was going to take her back to their flat. This had to work.
