Gnarls Barkley, ‘Pictures’
Gnarls Barkley — the singer CeeLo Green backed by the producer Danger Mouse — has returned after 18 years. “Pictures” is a preview of “Atlanta,” an album due March 6 that’s billed as the duo’s final collaboration.
In “Pictures,” Green sings about memories, mortality, glimpses of growing up and the vagaries of fate among childhood friends: “One dead, one in jail, one’s a functioning addict.”
A crisp beat, soothing keyboard chords and gospel-choir harmonies promise reassurance, even as the lyrics face change and loss: “Pictures are the only things I get to keep,” Green sings.
