Just posted the 4th of July entry to my "year long Kazolai holiday themed series"
the first part of which goes like this:
Kaz and Nikolai walk down the street. They’re not touching right now, but Nikolai keeps turning his chest toward Kaz when he talks to him and right now, that’s close enough.
“So,” Nikolai says leadingly as they pass a store Kaz has passed many times and still has no idea what they even sell. Maybe it’s just a money laundering front. Who knows anymore. “Are you doing anything for the 4th of July?”
Kaz blinks over at him before returning his attention to where they’re approaching a curb and Kaz needs to make sure he’s not going to trip on it. “...why would I do something on that day?”
Nikolai smiles a little hesitantly. “For Independence Day?”
Kaz frowns, confused. “...that was back in May.” Why has Nikolai gotten the date so egregiously wrong? Surely there’s a good reason.
Nikolai looks confused now. “...what?”
Kaz stops after negotiating his stiff leg with the curb in question. “Wait, what are you talking about?” Maybe they’re on different pages, although how that’s possible, he doesn't know. You don’t just…misremember dates like this. Surely it's a date that’s been drilled into his head since he was—?
It’s as Nikolai is clarifying exactly what he’s talking about when Kaz realizes with a jolt that they are not, in fact, on the same page. They’re in completely different books. “The 4th of July, Independence Day. You know, fireworks?”
Kaz might be blushing a little but that is neither here nor there, and definitely not the point. “Oh. The American holiday.”
Nikolai still looks confused. “Yeah, it’s…yeah.”
Kaz sighs to himself. “I thought you were talking very strangely about Liberation Day,” he confesses. Kaz is the one who’s making shit up, actually. How could that date have slipped his mind? Jesper and Wylan celebrate it every year with the biggest fireworks Kaz has ever encountered that might not be strictly legal; that’s how big they are.
“Nope, I’m talking about a completely different thing,” Nikolai assures him.
“Well, then, I think the answer to your question is painfully obvious now,” Kaz says a little shortly.
Nikolai laughs as they make their way across the street to the ramped curb on the opposite side. “It is. Would you like to do something with me for the American holiday of Independence Day?”
Kaz considers it. “...what would it entail?” he finally asks.
Nikolai shrugs. “I have a boat I’d like to take you on to see the fireworks. It’s a very nice experience, in my opinion. One I maybe want to share with you.”
Kaz hesitates. For good reason, he thinks desperately. Kaz plus boats equals not a good time but…hey. This is Nikolai. It’s not like he’d let Kaz fall in the water…
