Speaking of dance-pantsed, what were your thoughts on it?
People hated on the design for it waaaaay too much and it was really annoying. I understand why but… man, still. True, I didn’t like the 3D and would’ve loved to have seen it in 2D (actually, I would’ve loved to have seen what they’re doing right now on the Peabody and Sherman show that’s on Netflix) and I didn’t like how they kept the Mayor and Miss Bellum and the Prof basically the same, but I really really liked the girls and their new designs (so 60s mod!) and was like… well, I’m still torn on Mojo’s design because there were things I hated and things I loved (the outfit embellishments were AMAZING). A lot of the scenes were muddled and sometimes you couldn’t tell where you were supposed to look or what the focal point was, but I really appreciated the effort because you could tell that they were deriving the new look from the 60s inspired designs of the original series. So I really liked that a lot! You could tell it was by artists who knew exactly where the original show got it’s inspiration from and were likewise very inspired and wanted to make something that looked amazing.
The voice acting directing and the story were entirely different though… and weren’t very good. The fact that everyone came back for the special was great, but they weren’t given very good direction so they all sounded kind of off most of the time. The girls had much different personalities than in the original and there were some things they did where I was like, “What’s with this temper tantrum they’re having? They wouldn’t start trashing a store because they aren’t getting their way,” or “Why the hell is Buttercup crying over one of Blossom’s dorky hero monologues?” The plot itself pretty much trashed the Prof’s origin story and the whole reason why the girls were created in the first place (because they saved him as a small kid from being thrown into the Townsville volcano by Mojo and he spent the rest of his life dedicated to science and trying to create the perfect little girls who saved him). There were some cute jokes but there was a lot of cringe worthy stuff.
And the ice breath thing. UGH. The whole ice breath thing. Plus the fact that they got Ringo Starr to appear was as if someone had just seen Meet The Beat-Alls and only had that as their frame of reference for the entire series. As if the whole show revolved around Beatles references or something, ugh.
So it was a decent special overall. It wasn’t great and it wasn’t horrible but it was in the middle. If you take almost any still image of the special though it really does look gorgeous and genuinely artistic compared to what this new show’s delivering.Â
I guess the best thing about it was that the whole reason I even made this blog was because that special had pumped me up enough to finally start my own PPG-centered Tumblr. So I have it to thank for that. :D
