James came over every weekend. It felt like second nature, and Lin didn't have the will power to deny him entry into the apartment when he sent a stupidly needy text after shift or quietly asked to crash at his place in the work room. He loved seeing the other man's face smooshed against the comforter on his bed, adored feeling him gently nudge his head upward when they watched a movie so Lin would run his fingers through the messy curls. Everything was escalating so quickly, but Lin didn't feel like it was reaching a dead end. Quite the opposite, in fact. He felt like this was the road to something healthy, something that Lin could learn from. A bond that would serve a good purpose to the both of them.

He didn't know why he did it. Only what, 4 months had passed maybe? Since they started hanging out. But it felt right. Lin silently hoped he'd feel James kiss back, but he didn't. Lin pulled away gently and looked back at him, still cupping his chin. "I should've asked. I'm sorry, I...heh." Lin smiled nervously. "I got ahead of myself," he said. Ogilvie looked at him with lips parted. "Now that was stupid." James grinned, putting his own hand where Lin's was on his face as he cut the silence short. The second kiss felt so much better. Too good, even. The feeling of finally being able to run his hands through James's hair while they locked lips, the other's hands hugging Lin's waist. Maybe he'd finally played something right. One time in his dipshit adult life he pulled a golden ticket. And it was when he turned 26. Not 25, but a year after everyone says your prefrontal cortex fully forms. To hell with it, he got the boy he wanted.
