Despite its on the nose, naval gazing dialogue, half the story being illustrated in this incredibly sterile, over referenced style and its writing over all suffering from cliche, pacing issues, and a comically grimdark tone, the one hand and the six figures manages to be more than the sum of its parts, and cumulates into a fairly satisfying finish. Some moments of paneling abstraction and strong presentation help it along as well.
2.5/5
The Picture of Everything Else has been my favorite read of the new year. Dan Waters, Kishore Mohan and Aditya Bidikar fully transport you to Paris at the dawn of the 20th century. The cast is fully realized and I just want to stay in that world of Artisans. It reminds me of the best of Charles Dickens and I cannot wait until issue 2 drops. - Poethier

Lucifer #5 - DC Vertigo
By Dan Waters, Max Fiumara, & Sebastian Fiumara
Syrocax and Lucifer have an interesting history - obviously. Syrocax is the mother of his child, Caliban, the both of them were exiled to an island (by Lucifer), Syrocax is dead, she has people living in her skull who are manifestations of her memories. Frankly, they have some issues to work through. I wish them the best of luck.
Stingy Jack, on the other hand, is just petty, empty and only seeking revenge. He gives little regard to other people, and is leaving a string of travesties behind him; he doesn’t care how many people he’s hurting or about the damage he’s causing.Â
Witches have a wicked power in this world, and Penelope was one of their coven. Apparently, our police-man-spouse inherited her mark when he killed her in a car crash, and unintentionally became a member of their crew. This means he can be summoned by Syrocax, but cannot be a true witch; only women can be witches in this world. Unfortunately this mark also poisons him. He was an innocent man, kind, and loyal. I hope he gets a happy-ever-after, at least in the afterlife.Â
Lucifer #4 - DC Vertigo
By Dan Waters, Sebastian Fiumara & Max Fiumara
Stingy Jack is the villain. Straight-up, no questions asked, the villain. Bad guy, has always been a bad guy, kinda deserves his fate. So, are Lucifer and Syrocax wanting to do good things? And Stingy Jack is intentionally sabotaging their plan? Or is Lucifer’s plan still unknown to us so Stingy Jack is just after petty revenge?Â
I pity Lucifer, and the cop. I’m glad Penelope left her brother behind to his fate - the selfish, selfish man - but I’m heartbroken it led to her downfall. I’m sorry it lead to her whole family’s downfall. I’m still having a hard time tracking when we are in the story and which character is real.
I considered stopping this series, but it’s picking up in speed. Pieces are coming together, so I’m willing to stick it out.
Preview- Lucifer #4
Lucifer is enlightened. Caught in a web of bargains and deceit centuries in the making, the Devil uncovers the truth about the peculiar prison he is trapped within.
Meanwhile: the detective hiding in the bushes draws close to solving the mystery of Gately House, if only he can recall his own name.
