fluidlife:only Interviews James What (Crosstown Rebels)
Q: So Sir What! It's been a few years since you and the Fluidlife crew have engaged on a musical level. Give us an idea on where your sound is at these days? A: Hi! Since I was in melbourne for Fluidlife back in December 2011 I’ve been globetrotting more than ever and my studio gear has been in storage so it’s been hard to find quality studio time. As i didn’t have all my analog gear I decided to take on remixes until I was back together with my hardware. I also collaborated on some new tracks with Luca C and then Damian Lazarus. I’m a music lover and collect all sorts of different music and draw ideas and inspiration from that and from my travels. The past 8 months or so Dan Berkson & I have been back in the studio together regularly working on a album which we hoping to wrap up soon so very excited about that. Q: You're coming off the back of a massive May with a South Africa Tour and this years Afrikaburn! Tell us some of the highlights you've had? A: There’s a great little scene in South Africa and it’s been great to be invited back a few times in quick succession, and make some good friends there. The highlight was playing on the Love Machine bus run by the Ledhedz camp, which is the South Africa tribute to Robot Heart of Burning Man. Also playing at Truth in Johannesburg on my birthday was amazing, there was a really good vibe there, great club! Q: You've been a regular at the now infamous Burning Man Festival, can you offer some insight into why this is such a special place on the global music calendar? Q: Well burning man has been going on for decades, but it seems it’s only in the past 5 years that the scene I feel i’m part of has been making huge efforts to go and setup camps and bring our music there. I think it’s so special because the desert is a kind of otherworldly setting, the crackled or powdery white earth, kind of like a blank canvas. The amount of effort and creativity that goes into this festival is unrivalled, it is truly the participants that make the festival rather than only the organisers. Encouraging everyone to contribute is what makes everyone’s burn special. A prime example being the Robot Heart bus, which is kind of like London’s Fabric on wheels. Meeting up with friends and other artists and music lovers in this very special setting makes for some magical moments. Q: Your career in the business has elevated very nicely from our perspective. Can you offer some advice as to how you've achieved some of the things you are most proud of? A: Thanks, well I’ve just been following my passion for music, travel and meeting people. I’ve been lucky to be kind of making a living out of it now but there was no obvious path for me to get here. I guess the main advice is to stay open minded, be real with people and dig deep for music. Knowing your hardware and software and learning an instrument helps too. I think the combination of those things brought about most of the oportunities I’ve had. Q: With the northern hemisphere summer creeping up on us, what plans do you have for work & for relaxation over the next few months? A: This summer I’ll be spending as much time as possible in London to finish my album with Dan Berkson, we are almost done and I can’t wait to get this new material out, so that’s the priority. We have been moving the studio to a new location so making some changes and need to test some new gear to improve the setup before getting back to work. This week I’m in the south of France setting up some music gear I moved down from London. I grew up here before moving to London and it’s a good place to take a break from it all. Q: Any cheeky indications as to what productions are coming out over the next few months for us to watch out for? A: Last week my remix of Dusky’s Mystics just came out on Dogmatik along with a laura jones remix. While in Bali I worked on some music with Luca C and some new friends we made out there. We have a single coming out feat. Navid Izadi with 3 remixes on Southern Fried Records. Next release after that will be the album with Dan Berkson, not sure about release dates at the moment though. Q: How's your tour diary looking for the rest of the year and what are the shows you particularly look forward to and why? A: My tour diary kind of depends on progress with album.. So I will mainly be doing European dates this summer, although in July planning a weekend in Brazil and a small Asia/Australia tour from mid July. Particularly Looking forward to playing in Japan for the first time, really excited, I’ve been dying to go there! Q: Thank you for taking the time with us today. Just before we let you shoot off, what is the most remarkable experience / advice you've had throughout your lifetime? A: Cool, and thanks for writing some questions rather than sending a generic interview :D Well this is the toughest question, kind of like what’s your favourite track. Some good advice my mum used to give me is “don’t let anyone get you by the balls.” cheers! j.x
