Mental Mapping Manhattan
A map-less representation of Manhattan, no less a part of the project despite it not being bounded by the grid, from the Harvard neuroscience Ph.D candidate Dan Bear. (When he becomes the next Daniel Dennett or Oliver Sacks or Brian Green, you can say you read him here, first.) It captures the spirit of Map Your Memories by directly addressing the way Dan actually experiences Manhattan. It's like the question of how can I know the red you see is the red I see? Here is Dan trying to explain his red:
"Most of the mental mapping I do is in space and time--how do I get from here to there, how long will it take, etc.? Even abstract ideas are hard to frame outside of space and time. One of the most fun things about neuroscience is starting to think of all the different ways information (meant liberally) can be represented, and which ways the brain actually uses. This kind of thinking is even more extreme in physics, where some ideas only make sense when you leave the spatiotemporal world behind completely and think in the "conjugate" world of frequency: repetition, resonance, harmony, interference, etc. It's not just a different way of thinking about the same things--it's the necessary correspondence that underlies wave-particle duality, the Uncertainty Principle, crystallography, and so much more. (Okay, it's just the Fourier transform but that's seriously short-selling it.)
Things that look one way in the spatiotemporal world look completely different in frequency space. The simplest example is a pure sine wave: in space or time it undulates over and over in exactly the same way, stretching out in either direction to infinity. But in frequency space, it just looks like a single vertical line of infinite height; it's synonymous with one number, its frequency. Sometimes thnking in frequency space is totally baffling--a realist painting in usual space would become abstract expressionism in frequency space--but in other cases, we enter the conjugate world without realizing it. A high C sounds like one single thing, not a droning wave that changes in time. Actually, most of the music I love best works because I eventually perceive its different temporal repetitions as discrete states of mind. I'm thinking of the various drawn-out phrases in "A Love Supreme" or the great Bob Dylan songs with 10 verses and no bridge. My point is that it's rare to find yourself in this simpler state of mind, removed from seeing the world in space and time. But that's exactly how I feel walking through Manhattan. The geography lends itself to this so perfectly--one frequency for the short cross-street spacings, another for the less frequent major streets, an even longer one for periodically looking up and realizing you're somewhere totally new. I can remember the Cartesian coordinates I need to meet people or find my way back, but all my memories are of walking, not from point A to point B but just being in that single-minded place that doesn't depend on where I am. Does that make sense? A peculiarity of this is that walking east-west is not as fun as walking north-south, I think because it has less regular street spacings--less 'zen'."
