I would additionally make the case that while Photoshop and Wacom tablets are indeed expensive, they are economical in other ways.  

So for example, I can imitate oil paintings digitally without the mess and the expense of actually buying oil paints and canvas.  As a university student, I move around a lot and I rarely stay in one place longer than an academic year; I have neither the work space nor the storage space to paint and store anything that can’t fit in a sketchbook.  I do, however, have such space on my computer.

On a personal level, I enjoy digital art more because I don’t feel bound to the strokes I make.  If I make a mistake, I can ctrl+z as far back as my computer can handle.  I can stretch, move, and tweak things without having to erase or start from the beginning again.  I can create layers so that if I mess up on one stage, I don’t feel like all my effort was for nothing.  

Personally, I find digital art to be more conducive to experimentation than traditional art.  If my experiments in colours, in layering styles, or what-have-you fail, I can delete the whole thing without feeling like I’ve wasted anything more than my time.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I haven’t experimented with traditional mediums, but I’ve always felt like I was wasting valuable resources (i.e. expensive paints and paper/canvas).  I feel more pressure to produce a masterpiece with traditional mediums than I do with digital ones.  I can draw any old shit in Photoshop because the resources at my disposable are imperishable (colours, brushes, tool sets, etc).
