Normally when I’m unexpectedly handed a homemade CD at a music festival it would be received with a certain amount of waryness. In this case however, it came from a good friend so my expectations were high, and I was not dissapointed.
Damiki is a new Leeds based songwriter, producer and self-procalimed “audio thug, poetry devotee”. Bold, but dignified (?). His influences (Caribou, Everything Everything, Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, Kindness etc) could also read as a list of sonic comparisons, but that’s alright with me because they’re all ACE!
‘Before You Got The Tan’ is his first track of electronic/alt/pop to be posted online. Childhood memories of best friends are laid over joful, bouncey electronic beats, and alongside samples of “the Hari Krishna dancing, singing and making music around Covent Garden on New Year’s Eve”.
It’s easy to hear his busy mind at work in this layered, constantly interweaving piece of music, but I’m certain people will be even more impressed once they witness this man’s fantastic charisma and energy performing on stage (when the day comes). Until then I don’t think we’ll have too long to wait before another track surfaces...
