Answering for Damalis- he was created for the story. The story had a spot for his character type, and from that space, he formed along the way.

Answering for Malik since he's one of the few that did- yes! He had a desert cat roughly the size of a lynx from our world. This ended approximately as well as you would expect a small child owning a wild big cat would, and he still has many deep scars.
