My all-time favorite actually wound up birthing my foray into the high-fantasy genre of writing. My second book was going to only see an element of high fantasy, but it wound up flying out of control because of this stupid myth.

It’s a very old Welsh myth from a document known as the Mabinogi. It’s thought to only really be a tidbit of the larger story, but it captured my heart and it led me into Eurytus.

Once upon a time, there was a deity named Arawn. God of the dead, the dreaming, and of war, Arawn enjoyed hunting, riding across the moors of Annwn with his hounds in search of wayward souls, and challenging demigods and other proud men to combat when they themselves grew too proud and destructive.

One morning, Arawn was riding across the moors again; hounds baying and crying as he pursued and hunted a great stag. The animal was able to outpace him for quite a while, until it was shot by a man that was most certainly not Arawn.

Pwyll pen Annwn was the king of Dyfed, and he, too, had been tracking the very same stag. But Arawn had been pursuing it longer, and as a god, demanded recompense for the theft of his kill.

Pwyll was a proud and noble man. He didn’t fear Arawn, but offered him the respect he was due. “How may I earn your forgiveness?” he asked, and Arawn had an idea.

For a year and a day, Pwyll was to take the form of Arawn and rule Annwn in Arawn’s place. Then, at on the last day of their secret, he was to challenge the only enemy Arawn had that he couldn’t best. Hafgan.

To Arawn’s great surprise, Pwyll’s valor and skill in battle saw him kill Hafgan. Arawn was so pleased that, when he appeared to Pwyll in order to resume their rightful faces, he pronounced Pwyll’s debt to be paid.
