Dalit nursing student ragged by seniors in Kalaburgi, Karnataka
In an extremely disturbing incident, a 19-year-old Dalit nursing student hailing from Kerala has allegedly become a victim of severe ragging in a nursing college in Kalaburgi, Karnataka.
On May 9, Aswathi, a first-semester Dalit student of Al Qamar College of Nursing, was reportedly ragged by her seniors for being ‘dark’ and was forced to drink toilet disinfectant liquids, following which she developed serious health issues and had to be admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (KMCH).Though Aswathi had been suffering this trauma for more than a couple of weeks now, an FIR has been registered 40 days after she was admitted in this hospital.
College authorities are being questioned about the delay. The authorities maintained that, in their awareness, Aswathi seemed to be suffering from personal problems and they had no idea about the ragging incidents.
The victim has named the seniors in the FIR and said that she was too scared to report this to the police earlier. Aswathi, who hails from Pulluvanpadiyil near Edappal in Malappuram district, does not have a father, and her mother is a daily wageworker who had borrowed Rs 3 lakh to fund her education. She is currently in a critical condition and her recovery is uncertain.
