Soulmate 22 for Brackish/Milton 💖
This one was so much fun to write oh wow thank you babe like 💖💖💖22. the one where it’s impossible to lie to your soulmate.
Brackish Okun wasn’t in the habit of lying to people usually. He only lied when he absolutely needed to or for Very Important Science .... which happened often but it wasn’t like he didn’t try to make up for the lies, and he made sure that nobody ever got hurt by his lies. That was non-negotiable and the few times that people were hurt it was people that could afford to be hurt. Those millionaires didn’t need all of that money. They could do without a tenner here and there.
Milton Isaacs was a man who lied and lied often. It came with his job; he never told too big of a lie to hurt someone but there were times when you couldn’t tell someone the truth straight away working in a hospital or medical wing. If his patient’s life was in danger then he would protect them and tell a small white lie. Lying wasn’t always inherently a wrong thing to do.
The first time they met each other they were truthful. Brackish wasn’t lying about his confusion and about wishing he had kicked the doctor in the face the day before. Milton wasn’t prepared to hold back too many details about the patient or his unusual memory loss. Neither of them had a reason to lie, why would they?
Their next few meetings gave the same results. They had no reason to lie to each other and so they told the truth. It was simple really, how could they work together effectively if either one or both of them was keeping details back purposefully. Brackish wouldn’t take back aiming the kick at his face and Milton never could quite pretend he minded.
Working at Area 51 together was a blur of activities some days, others spent looking at the clock and waiting for the minute they could race back to their rooms and relax. If they had any interaction with each other it was always kind, truthful and pleasant. It made sense to be. They bickered good naturedly, occasionally got into a spat about who’s opinion should be taken and who should be ignored but it was always resolved and neither of them thought badly of the other afterwards. Disagreements over the sort of things they were talking about happened. That was just working life.
One day Milton found himself stumbling over an invitation to watch the stars together after. Brackish had always loved the sky and could rattle off the names of the constellations and stars as easily as he could sing the entirety of ‘Modern Major General’ (which was something he didn’t expect to find out about the scientist). For all the world Brackish couldn’t bring himself to give the usual scathing remark and lie about having to focus on work, just give Milton a small nod and promise to meet him later.
Talking and watching the stars led to coffee and watching the stars which led to the both of them sharing a blanket when Brackish revealed he hadn’t thought to bring his own. One meteor later and the two of them were turning to look at each other, so close they were practically nose to nose. “If you’re okay with it I think I’d really like to kiss you.” Milton mumbled, cheeks heating when Brackish leaned in to rub their noses together. “I’d really like it if you did that.”
