CultureHISTORY: Beginning of 2016 & End of 2016
#VintagePBO: President Obama & First Lady Michelle Obama - 2012 Re-Election Campaign -Â Iowa, August 2012
A few photos & words to give context to the final famous image:Â
âAsked why he was hugging the first lady so hard, the president answered without hesitation, âBecause I love my wife.â Michelle Obama gave a chuckle and went into further detail. âAlso, I hadnât seen him in a while... You know, when youâre campaigning... weâre two ships passing in the night, and the first time I saw him was when I walked on stage to greet him. And thatâs my honey giving me a hugâ. The president chimed back in, telling Michelle, âI like giving you hugs.ââ - Huffington Post (November 2012) Â
In future times, I think Barack Obamaâs re-election campaign will come to be hallowed by the historians. In the face of so much hatred and bigotry (including GOP CEOs proclaiming they would fire workers over ACA here, here and here), this man prevailed. He and his wife prevailed. And they gave us four more years of greatness. No matter what comes, everyone, and especially PoC, should be proud that we were alive for this moment in history.Â
I got an unexpected look into the eyes of a man who intertwined his roles as commander in chief and consoler in chief on a solemn day filled with remembrance and respect for sacrifices made - and sacrifices yet to be made.
CultureHISTORY: President Obama & First Lady Michelle Obama, Arlington Cemetery, Veterans Day 2009
"The face of another woman - who had grimly sat in a folding chair for hours next to a headstone she'd arranged flowers around - suddenly broadened into a smile as she stood to embrace Obama and thank him for paying his respects. She was so overcome with emotion that a soldier from the Army's Old Guard had to console her afterward...
He gave hugs. He shook wet, chilly hands. He wanted to know something about each fallen warrior... I then told him I'm a reporter for the Daily News - but was just there to visit friends. "Well, James," he said, looking me in the eye, "just because you're a journalist doesn't mean you can't honor your friends here' ...
The First Lady smiled and squeezed my hand. I thanked her for coming to Section 60. Her face opened up into a smile filled with warmth and comfort, a welcome antidote for the weather and sadness around her. She said there was no finer place to be on Veterans Day." - New York Daily News
A beautiful 2009 column from James Gordon Meek, former NY Daily News columnist and current ABC News correspondent, on his chance meeting with the young president and his wife as Meek visited the graves of his friends on Veterans Day 2009.
No matter what comes, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are now part of the fabric of this nation and we should all be grateful for that. What a time we had, America. What a time.
