some DAFS sample pages I put together recently- part 1. it's just a random scene with no context. It's been kinda fun to draw in traditional format again!

Do you have any idea why it's labeled a "grant" when we get money from a DAF? My nonprofit handles grants differently and it gets confusing for the AR volunteer.
I couldn’t say for sure, but I believe it has to do with how giving via DAF is structured. Because you’ve already “donated” when you paid into the DAF, technically the money belongs to the institution administering it*. They may have to call it a grant so that it’s differentiated from direct giving. It may also have to do with the fact that you can’t “benefit” from giving through a DAF (you can’t buy gala tickets, for example, with a DAF), and a grant is a more restrictive gift, legally, than straight donation.
So yeah, probably “because lawyers” is the answer, but it can make things a bit muddled on the receiving end.
It may help whoever is handling the payments to do some reading (there are plenty of “what are DAF” websites out there now) and learn to spot the signs of a DAF grant, if they have the bandwidth for that kind of thing. Generally they’ll be from either something banky sounding like Fidelity Charitable or Schwab Charitable (the two big ones) or from a Community Foundation, which is the other kind of organization that usually administers DAFs. They may come with an extra page or two of documentation, so if your volunteer is just getting the checks, maybe have whoever’s opening the mail keep an eye peeled for the documentation and separate out “could be DAF” grants from the pack.
* I moved this down here because I go on a total side trip but: in theory you could say “Give to X charity” and the organization administering your DAF could straight up say “No, we’re gonna give it to Y charity instead.” That’s not illegal, the way DAFs are set up. They wouldn’t be in business very long if they did it, because nobody would trust them after that, but I suspect it’s only a matter of time before someone tries it. My money, if it happens, is on it happening at a religious community foundation managing funds for its faith partners (like conservative Christian groups refusing to DAF-grant to queer orgs). Honestly, I’m a little shocked nobody has tried to ponzi-scheme a DAF so far, but their obscurity and affiliation with nonprofits probably has kept the worst of the sharks from considering it. It’s one reason I was leery of Charityvest at first, but they haven’t screwed me yet...

Oh?
With the weirdness of time during a pandemic, I completely missed that April 2021 marks 10 years since I started And I'm The Dad here on Tumblr. Almost 14K followers — though that number is pretty meaningless — and apparently averaging ~187 posts a year. That was just before "dad bloggers" was much of a thing, I think.
Love u!!!
