       the  hotel  cortez  was  the  main  character  ;    she  ,   john  ,   her  mother  ,   the  guests  .  .  .     they  were  just  background  characters  ,   meant  to  fill  the  room  and  thicken  the  plot  .    room  64  was  just  as  special  .     serena  stared  up  at  john  ,   her  fawn  -  brown  eyes  silently  critiquing  his  every  move  and  word  .     they  had  been  caught  up  in  a  whirlwind      ━━      but  it's  nearly  over  now  .     she  didn't  want  to  hear  his  excuses  ,   or  her  dad's  excuses  ,   or  anything  else  .

       ❛     stop  it  ,     ❜       serena  chastises  ,   an  eyebrow  raising  as  her  cheeks  flush  .     across  the  pool  ,   gideon  is  exiting  the  house  ,   all  sun  -  kissed  freckles  and  bronzed  hair  .     he  raises  his  hand  ,   and  serena  can't  help  but  feel  shy  as  she  waves  back      ━━      something  she's  never  felt  with  him  before  .

       she'd  invited  morgue  and  gideon  to  her  house  in  the  hamptons  ,   to  spend  time  together  before  she  went  back  to  paris  for  the  ballet  season  .     it  is  serena's  favorite  tradition  ,   soaking  up  the  last  rays  of  the  summer  before  she  spent  her  days  twirling  on  stage  .     they'd  come  visit  ,   of  course  ,   but  this  was  when  serena  could  give  them  both  all  of  her  love  and  attention  .

       but  this  is  the  first  time  in  awhile  .     since  gideon  went  to  california  ,   since  serena  went  to  paris  .     a  wave  of  longing  and  regret  washes  over  her  ;     she'd  missed  morgue  more  than  the  ocean  missed  the  moon  .     serena  reached  over  ,   and  laced  her  fingers  with  morgue  .     ❛     did  he  get  more  muscular  ?     ❜

       OVERWHELMING  .     IT  WAS  ALL  SO  OVERWHELMING  .    none  of  the  clothes  in  the  mall  looked  like  something  she  wanted  to  wear  .    the  lights  were  bright  .     she  felt  stupid  looking  for  a  dress  .     but  she  has  no  interest  in  continuing  her  old  life      ━━      down  to  the  floorboards  and  nails  ,   she  wanted  to  rip  it  up  and  begin  anew  .     normal  girls  wear  dresses  .     normal  girls  enjoy  shopping  .     mila's  blue  eyes  are  narrowed  ,   her  lips  pressed  in  a  tight  line  .        ❛     i  do  not  know  what  suits  me  ,     ❜     she  finally  admits  .

       it's  late  in  the  evening  ,   the  sun  beginning  to  set  outside  the  studio  walls  .     it  was  beautifully  visible  through  the  floor  to  ceiling  windows  ,   and  magnified  by  the  mirrors  that  let  the  light  bounce  around  the  room  .     every  golden  glow  lands  on  serena's  body  ,   outstretched  and  balancing  on  one  ,   single  pointe  .     she  is  so  lost  in  her  dance  ,   that  she  doesn't  notice  alex  until  he's  striding  across  the  floor  .

       ❛     i  didn't  notice  it  was  so  late  ,     ❜        she  says  ,   a  small  explanation  as  she  turns  to  him  ,   brown  doe  eyes  apologetic  .       ❛     i'm  sorry  if  you  were  waiting  .  .  .    ❜

       sixteen  ,   and  serena  had  never  been  more  beautiful  ,  yet  there  was  so  much  more  beauty  to  come  .  serena  hated  coming  back  to  louisana  ever  since  her  father  was  killed  ,  and  for  years  had  remained  in  paris   ━   but  if  anyone  could  draw  her  back  home  ,   it  was  gideon  and  morgue  .   and  now  ,   sat  in  his  backyard  ,   secluded  from  the  independence  day  party  that  mr.  gemstone  had  thrown  ,   serena  felt  she  had  to  soak  in  as  much  of  gideon  as  she  could  for  the  summer  ,   before  returning  to  paris  .

       maybe  that  would  be  easier  than  she  thought  .

       the  sun  was  beginning  to  set  ,   and  soon  ,   they'd  be  shooting  off  fireworks  .  when  serena  felt  him  staring  ,   she  glanced  over  at  him  with  rose  petal  cheeks  .

let's  go  too  far  .

       it  didn't  take  much  interpreting  to  understand  what  he  meant  .   serena  slid  closer  to  him  on  the  bench  ,   her  delicate  palm  resting  on  his  .

        after all of the practicing she's been doing, serena nods. that might not be what terracotta is referring to, though. she steps outside of the theatre with her, then rubs her eyes at the bright sunlight.
