“So…cock with ruffled feathers?” Michael suddenly said.
“You…You were here when those agents were?” You said, lifting your head up to look at him.
“No. I was across the city, listening in to make sure you were okay.”
Looking down at you with a tender smile, he said, “Thanks for not telling them.”
“If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know why I didn’t.”
He leaned down to you, getting really close to your face to rub your nose and in a sing-song voice said, “Because you love me.”
You smiled, pushing his face away.
“Don’t push it.”
“I’m not hearing a no.” He said, laughing.
Looking away, you felt your face fall as you remembered that night. You debated your next words, trying not to ruin the moment you just had.
“You bit the hand, Michael. You bit the hand..”
“Does this mean I’m in a time out?”
You turned back to him with a stern expression on your face. “Hmm…” you said, thinking with your head cocked to the side. “More like a doghouse 50 miles away.”
He looked genuinely sad then and you almost wanted to take it back.
“I…I’m sorry.”
“I don’t care what happens to me, but you damn near gave Margaret a heart attack!”
He started laughing and you couldn’t help but laugh with him.
“They seem like nice people.”
You looked at him pointedly. “Why do you think I pushed on the letter opener? They are off limits. Matter of fact, everyone is off limits. You work at a hospital, Michael. Can’t you get the blood from there?”
“The point is, I don’t want to use human blood, Y/N. I’m afraid of what it will turn me into.”
“But if you’re full, wouldn’t that quence the urge to hunt?”
He was silent for a few minutes, then said, “I don’t know. It’s all still too new to be sure.”
“I see…” Hugging your arms, you added, “I’m getting cold. Do you want to come inside?”
“What about the doghouse 50 miles away?”
Cocking your eyebrow, you said, “Night’s still young.” before turning around to walk into your apartment.
You pet Maggie as you crossed the threshold into your living room. She waited until you passed before making a beeline to Michael. You turned to see her jump into his arms.
“Traitor.” You said, laughing.
“Don’t be jelly. I’m the favorite.” He said as Maggie licked his face. “I missed you too! Yes I did!”
Rolling your eyes, you watched as he carried her into your apartment, setting her down on the floor. She rolled over, exposing her belly. Michael got down on the floor, alternating between running his hands up and down her abdomen and playing her like a drum. Her head lolled back, like she was in pure Heaven. Maggie rolled back over and sat right in his lap, looking up at him like he was the only thing in the world. Michael snuggled her, rubbing her muzzle and neck.
“I’m not jelly.” You said, crossing your arms over your chest.
He looked up at you with a “Right” smirk on his face.
“I’m not!”
Sighing as he stood up, he held his hands out, waving them forward.
“Come on.”
“...for what?”
“If you want me to carry you, just say so. I could very easily do so.”
Hugging your stomach tight as your heart felt stuck in your throat, you backed up into the breakfast island.
“I don’t want you to carry me.”
“Okay. Your loss.” He said, smiling up at you through his lashes as he turned his attention back to Maggie.
You busied yourself in the kitchen, finding anything to keep your mind off that imagery as you listened to Michael babytalk Maggie. You knew he could feel your heart racing and hoped he would keep the subject dropped. Taking a second to think, you went to your fridge and grabbed some garlic cloves. Holding your hands behind your back, you saw him get up and pull a chair out from the island, keeping his head low as his fingers tapped on the island. You threw a garlic clove at his head, wondering if there would be any reaction.
Feeling it hit the top of his head, he looked up, a confused expression on his face. You both looked at the garlic clove at the same time sitting on the island. He picked it up gingerly and gave you a “really?” expression.
“Not that kind of vampire.”
Picking up a silver tea spoon, you threw it at him, watching in awe as he caught it.
“This is a hard concept for you, isn’t it?”
You shrugged. “I don’t know how any of this works, Michael. I was curious. You know, for science?”
Shaking his head, he said, “What’s next? Are you gonna throw a wooden stake at my heart?”
He stopped, growing a grave expression on his face. “On second thought, put a pin in that.”
You turned back around, silently happy that he wasn’t afflicted with the typical vampiric side effects. The relief soon turned to you chiding yourself at the silliness of it.
A few moments of silence went by before he spoke again.
“So…” Michael began. “You have a pretty mean evil eye.”
Not able to help yourself, you turned to him, aforementioned mean evil eye on your face.
“Ooh,” Michael remarked, fake shivering. “Making me all tingly. Mine’s better.” He said before flashing his vampire face.
Feeling your face go white as a sheet, you swallowed harshly before saying,
“This isn’t a competition, Michael.”
He ran his tongue across his fangs as his features changed back to human, the red eyes the last thing to leave.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were starting to enjoy becoming the monster.”
He pulled his head back, eyes going wide.
“Come on, I’m just having a bit of fun.”
“This isn’t exactly fun to me, Michael.”
He was gone in a split second, reappearing right in front of you.
“Are you scared of me?”
“Yes!” You blurted without thinking.
He moved back to stand against the island, sighing.
“If it wasn’t for Margaret, I’d be a bloodless heap on the floor!”
“I wouldn’t have hurt you.”
You scoffed. “Could’ve fooled me. I don’t think you had a choice that night. There was nothing human left in you. The monster doesn’t discriminate.”
His irises suddenly receded to white with irregular pupils. He was still for a moment, staring right at you. It was unnerving because you didn’t know what to expect. The blue of his eyes flooded in soon after.
“Come here.” He said quietly.
You flattened yourself against your sink, unsure of what to do. Moving towards you, he put his hands on your arms.
“Get over here.” He said through a smile.
“Why?”
“Just come here.” He said, pulling you into a hug.
Being close to Michael and having a calm heart rate did not go in the same sentence together, but you couldn’t help but relax when he started to run his fingers up and down your back as you felt his chin settle onto the top of your head.
“It’s okay.”
He hugged you tight, one hand on the back of your head. You started to tear up when he said against your ear, “I’m sorry for everything. Thank you for being there for me.”
“Someone’s gotta look out for you, idiot. I’m not scared of you.” You said, sniffling.
“Then what is it?”
“I’m scared for you.”
