A stream anole (Anolis oxylophus) in Tayutic, Costa Rica
by Tom Murray
Hi Dr Scherz! I live in North Florida and I've been seeing a lizard around that I don't recognize and I can't find any pictures of them. It's sort of like a green anole, but bigger around and it has a large crest on the back of its head and down its spine. Does this ring a bell?
These are probably knight anoles, Anolis equestris. They are quite widespread in Florida, but are native to Cuba.
Scientific Name: Anolis carolinensis Common Name(s): Green anole Family: Anolidae (anole); prev. Dactyloidae (anole) Life Stage(s): Adult Location: Plano, Texas Season(s): Spring
Male, with the pink dewlap. The taxonomy of anoles is rather contentious.
