so, ive been playing the infamous games. to really understand why i dont really like these games, you need to understand that i dont care for superheroes.
now dont take me wrong. i love the xmen, and the freedom and the fight for equality they represent. but i watch them, mostly, because... i wanna see cool powers on display. i wanna see them used, creatively. cuz i will never get to do that shit. its why jubilee is my favorite character, just strictly from the potential of what she could be. sure, the original animated show doesnt fullfill that potential, but the modern x-men 97 show does have a great episode of what jubilee is capable of (even though it kinda pisses me off that its basically futon rasen shuriken)
anyways, the infamous games, are in my mind the only superhero games that allow you to play as a super hero. free roam, choices. the karma system. stuff like that.
but my dissapointment stems from the fact that these games have not evolved since 2009. its all so formulaic, repetitive. boring. but i dont even really care about that. what really makes me sad is the creativity with power usage.
the traversal in infamous 1 is so boring. and so uncreative. the guy can use his hands as thrusters and grind on rails and shit. thats all the traversal you get. and they do explain it kind of well with his backstory, as a urban explorer, but god, why doesnt have a high jump? the ability to infuse his body with electricty and move faster? literally transform himself into a lightning bolt and shoot himself across the landscape. anything. you guys remember mario odyssey? where you could throw cappy in new donk city on those powerlines and mario literally become electricity? something, anything.
i couldnt try infamous 2 properly. i played it for like an hour but RPCS3 is not there yet, and even though i have a ps3, im not willing to play it a native fps. which was 15-22. maybe that one is better. ill have to wait
and now, second son, and by extension, first light.
dont get me started with delsin. you can boil down all powers into -
shoot
shoot harder
float
dash/run fast/glide
throw a grenade/throw a grenade/turn invisible
shoot a rocket/shoot a laser/shoot a couple of swords
special attack for each power
melee
thats it. all the powers are the same. and again. people will come in and be like "oh but it makes sense. delsin has been using these abilities for like two weeks. of course he wouldnt have his own style in it" but like. thats not my point. smoke is vastly different from neon, as neon is very different from video. im talking physically, as materials, these things are vastly different. yet they function in the same way??
this is just rambling, but, it makes me sad that, when humans imagine magic, or superpowers, we instantly go into throwing fireballs and killing each other and shit. and i get it. that is cool too! i would love to spar with somebody magically. but goddamn there is more to superpowers than just combat.
in these games, utility of powers comes through the traversal. but. there is a problem. neon is simply too good. once you get it, and reach rank 4 hero, you get endless run. and that, unfortunately, is the best traversal ability. glide cant compare. the radar dishes are too slow, even though they launch you pretty good. and smoke. smoke is so sad, cuz you can tell the devs wanted you to use it. you have smoke vents, and those little chimneys that give you height. but again. its too little.
maybe if the game was longer. but you literally get neon in the first two hours. and even the base neon run is better than using smoke. it makes me sad.
i really, really hope that infamous one day gets one more game. or somebody else tries to do a proper, superhero game. in my mind, the only game that sort of succeeds at this, is spiderman 2018. that game is great. but its spiderman. and his super powers are not the coolest to me.
ideally, we would have a fucking green lantern game. or atom eve game. somebody who can just manipulate matter into anything you want. i dont know how that would work in gameplay. i realize its too difficult, maybe. but goddamn, i wanna see it.
