Even if Damian was a bit of a little shit, Barbara was very fond of him. She knew that he had his own issues that led him to be this way, and honestly, she was surprised that people who had been through so much at such a young age, like Damian, had managed to come out on the other side without being a complete disaster. It made her feel inspired to see such resilience—she admired that in Damian, though she would never admit it, knowing that it would only feed his ego (and the last thing anyone in this family needed was a bigger ego.) “Have you given any though to college?” Barbara peeked over the book she was reading. “Gotham State was great, though maybe I just thought it was amazing because I went there when I was too young to know better.”

Lois had been in the middle of cooking when there was a knock on the door, and she still had the wooden spoon in her hand when she went to answer it. “Oh, it’s always nice to see you, Damian,” she said warmly when she opened it, gesturing for him to come in. “Come on, get in here before Krypto ends up eating dinner. Do you want to stay?” Lois always cooked a lot of food—after living with not one but two Kryptonians, she had learned a long time ago that what she thought was enough food was never enough—so there was always a little extra. “Jon’s not home yet, but he should be back any minute now.”
