15. Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers
Rating: 8/10
Played on: Steam Deck
Another casino roguelike, but this one feels completely different from Balatro, due to it being in development at the same time. Blackjack lends itself surprisingly well to this style of roguelike. Having the difference between your score and your opponents equal damage done makes a lot of intuitive sense, and hitting a blackjack giving you a bonus depending on your suit feels satisfying every time. I haven’t experienced all of the decks in this one yet, but from what I’ve played, I’ve found two dominant strategies - drawing your entire deck of low valued or negative cards to eventually hit 21, or making your entire deck worth 10 so you can consistently score 20 and only lose health if your opponent blackjacks. This game feels more akin to StS or Balatro though, in that getting your deck to the point of running one of those dominant strategies is the struggle, and being able to adapt to different opponents decks that disrupt your scores or cards is just as important. It will definitely be a game I continue playing after writing this review.
