30. Void Stranger
Rating: 10/10
Played on: Steam Deck
This might be one of my new favorite games Iāve played. Itās absolutely insane, and I donāt want to say too much, as coming into it completely blind was the way to experience it. All I knew going in was that it was a Sokoban puzzle game that was more than it seemed. And man, was that an understatement.
There's a lot going on with this game, and I donāt even know what I want to talk about and reveal. Several times through the experience, I thought I was getting close to finishing the āmainā story, but then a new mystery would appear, and Iād be playing for 10 more hours trying to follow that thread. Every single time I reached an āending,ā I was gobsmacked, from the first one I received after eating a certain fruit, to the final one where I learned the true nature of what was happening.
Impressively, this puzzle game makes replaying the same puzzles not a chore. Thereās almost a Metroidvania quality to the backtracking, especially after finding certain secrets, that make it exciting and fun to revisit puzzles youāve already finished. The fact that even restarting your game is a puzzle in and of itself was fascinating, and made the game feel super unique. I mean, Iāve NEVER played a game that uses the Steam achievements like this one does. It plays with a lot of fun meta elements despite the story not focusing on those pieces, and itās expertly done.
I wonāt say any specifics about the storyline, but it was beautiful the whole way through. Great themes of motherhood, legacy, mystery, and trauma, all told through various flashback sequences, hidden dialogue, and other secrets. The characters are all fantastic, and I genuinely canāt pick a favorite, I love them all.
Also. For being a monochrome, GameBoy style puzzle game, the art and music are beautiful. There are many great tracks throughout the puzzle rooms, from epic themes of progress to creepy, mysterious themes of confusion. And the pixel art portraits for every character are incredibly well done, giving everyone a unique personality. Also, hope you like boobs artistic nudity. Thereās a lot of that. And itās awesome.
After experiencing the final major ending, I did a lot of wiki diving to find the secrets I missed, and it genuinely might make me go back and find them myself at some point. Thereās so much packed in here. I knew it was more than it appeared to be, but I truly didnāt grasp how much more it is. Highly recommend to anyone, even if you have to look up puzzle solutions. There are plenty of guides that just focus on solving the micro puzzles, while leaving the macro stuff up to you to discover. I used one every so often when stuck on a room in the early game. Also, take notes! Much like Blue Prince earlier this year I have a massive document on my phone now with puzzle solutions and ideas. Itās been a really fun trend with the games Iāve played this year.
