"Who the hell even designed this place?"
Carter looked up at your question as the two of you stepped out of the elevator. Carter awkwardly shrugged.
"Only things I heard were from higher ups," he explained as he rolled his shoulders. "This site is actually pretty new from what I know."
"It most definitely doesn't look that way," you replied as you looked at the walls. "But why make it so confusing?"
"I heard some researchers complain about it too," Carter said as he turned to face you. "Said it was to make it harder for anomalies to escape, but I sincerely doubt it."
"Yeah, I figured the containment cells would have all been in the same place or something," you agreed. "They just kind of look scattered about."
"Since the foundation put so much money into building it I figure there must be a reason for it," your companion responded. "I mean, maybe there is something they really don't want getting out."
"And we're probably locked in here with it," you grimly commented. Carter nodded, his brows furrowed. There was a moment of silence before he spoke.
"Best not to think about it, let's just focus on getting out of here." He stood by your side, his hand on your shoulder.
"I've been going in circles for what feels like hours…" you admitted as you glanced around. "Got any clue where to go to next?"
"If we could just get to the heavy containment zone it should be smooth sailing…" he mumbled. "From what I know this part is the most confusing."
"The real question is why is the heavy containment zone closer to the entrance than light containment," he continued as he crossed his arms with a frown.
"That sounds really stupid," you snickered humorlessly.
"Yeah… it does," he mumbled as he looked at you. His eyes drifted towards your keycard. "You put that thing through 914, right?"
"I did."
"And something better came out."
"Sure did."
Carter seemed to think to himself for a moment, then his eyes drifted towards his gear and the gun on his hip. His eyes met yours.
"I got an idea." You saw his eyes crinkle, a sparkle of hope appearing as he approached you a bit closer. "Where did you find it?"
"All the way back, I think. It wasn't too far away from SCP-372's cell," you explained, gesturing back. Carter sighed.
"I really got no idea where that is," he mumbled as he nodded for you to lead the two of you back. "Like we said, there's no rhyme or reason to this place."
"I'm assuming not all of the facilities are like this," you brought up, glancing over your shoulder to look at him.
"No… I had my induction at Site-19, which is the biggest site we have." Carter held his gun tightly in his hands as he peered at a black patch on the floor nearby, an uncomfortable look on his face. "It's the parent site to this one, but Site-19 was better built and completely cohesive."
"Then… why not just keep everything here?" Carter hummed at your question as he glanced at the ceiling.
"Was a suggestion from a well respected doctor," he explained. "I really don't know the details, but he designed the place to deal with certain issues, but I think that's far above my pay-grade."
You nodded as you wandered past a few containment cells, and you stopped near a familiar one.
SCP-205.
You decided to double check, a gut feeling overtaking you. You walked over, Carter right behind you. Walking to the side, you came to a halt. The door was open. Your eyes widened as you quickly stepped towards it. Carter frowned, staying a bit further behind.
"Didn't you lock an anomaly in here?" The question nearly fell on deaf ears as you rushed into the room. Carter finally decided to follow.
"Y-yeah… the plague doctor," you stammered as you saw no trace of the anomaly in the room. Nothing seemed disturbed other than a stack of papers that seemingly had been shuffled. "How the hell did it get out?"
"Dunno, weird shit's been happening all over the place," Carter replied as he looked at the projection of the shadow lamps. "I reckon it's probably a malfunction in the door control systems."
"This sucks," you mumbled as Carter grabbed your shoulder, gently pulling you along. "This… really sucks."
"I think the doctor is probably the least of our worries," Carter tried to reassure you. "If you survived it well enough to be able to lock it up in a random cell, it shouldn't be too much of a problem."
"Yeah… you're right," you mumbled as you let Carter guide you back outside the cell. "It's not the worst thing."
A flicker appeared in the corner of your eye, causing you both to jump. Carter drew his gun, but nothing else was found.
"What the hell was that." Carter's voice cracked midway through that sentence as he flipped his visor back down with his thumb, hands still firm on his weapon.
"372," you replied calmly. Seeing your composed demeanor, Carter slowly lowered his gun, his shoulders relaxing slightly.
"Come on, let's get to 914," he mumbled as the two of you continued through the dark halls. "We'll be better prepared that way."
You regained some composure, nodding as you fell into step beside the agent. You took another few turns, wandering past SCP-372's containment. Carter turned to face the cell before lowering his head a little. The two of you found the tesla gate next, the body of the woman still present. Carter looked physically uncomfortable, coming to a halt.
"Is that… is that thing turned off?"
"Nah, it isn't."
You stepped onto the trigger zone, immediately stumbling back when the gate zapped. As soon as the electricity faded, you threw yourself through, landing on the ground and rolling. You stood up, looking back at Carter.
"Go on," you gestured for him to follow. Carter took a deep breath, planting a heavy foot on the yellow and black caution sign on the floor. The gate charged up and Carter recoiled. As soon as he had the chance, he jumped through, landing on his knees. You lent him your hand, and he gratefully took it. With a grunt you managed to get him to his feet.
"That was terrifying," Carter mumbled as he tried to compose himself. "Let's go, we're almost there."
finally, the familiar sight of the open blast doors revealed the clockwork machine behind them. You stepped in first, your companion following closely behind.
"Okay, you're gonna have to walk me through this," Carter said, turning to face you. You approached the machine, seeing it still set on fine.
"This is good, I put everything through fine," you explained as you looked back at him. Carter walked over to the input chamber, and you watched as he took his level two keycard, placing it cautiously on the floor of the chamber.
"Okay… let's give it a go," he said as he stepped back. You turned the key, causing the doors to slide shut. The machine came to live with a cacophony of turning gears, whirring and other loud noises. Carter physically winced, taking a step back. Finally, the doors slid back open with a hiss. You stepped into the output chamber, grabbing the now level three keycard. You popped out of the chamber, showing it to Carter with a smile. The agent took it and made a beeline for the containment doors, locking them using the card. He sighed as he turned back.
"Much better."
He took the helmet off, placing it on a shelf. Then the balaclava joined it, and Carter brushed a hand through his messy, short black hair.
"Okay… let's get the rest of these things upgraded before anything comes pounding on the door." He turned to face you, and you could see the bags under his eyes. A weak grin graced his features as he met your gaze. "I know, I look horrible."
"It's not that," you mumbled as you leaned back against the machine. "Just… feels right, to see another living human face."
It made it hard to remember you were trapped in an old video game in the first place. Carter nodded, swallowing thickly.
"Yeah… I know," he replied as he took off his ballistic vest, removing all the items from it and putting it in the clockwork machine. "I heard from older staff that this place gets to you, even if you're surrounded by others."
There was a pause as he joined your side to turn on the machine, a contemplative expression on his features.
"People get colder the longer they work here, more calloused," he continued as he looked at you. "Start caring less and less."
"For the greater good," you replied and Carter chuckled, rubbing his chin. The two of you remained silent as the machine finished its process. Carter glanced at your baggy uniform as he took the now seemingly heavier vest.
"What are you in for?" he asked as he put the vest back on him with some difficulty. "I mean, you don't strike me as a death row criminal."
You remained quiet for a moment. Now you had to make up some story as to how you possibly could have gotten here. You couldn't tell him the truth, obviously.
"I… I don't know," you finally said as you fixed your gaze on the floor. With all your might you tried to act sincere. "My memory of what happened before… it's just all so blurry ever since I woke up here."
"You're also new… Carter trailed off as he finished putting on his vest. "Guess it still must have been pretty bad to have you end up here."
"Maybe so, but I no longer remember," you replied as you watched Carter go back to the input chamber with his gun. Your situation had gotten much more off track compared to the game, making it feel so much more real. You barely registered the machine turning back on until the horrible noise sounded once again.
"I hope this won't get me in trouble with the higher ups…" Carter broke the silence again, rubbing his neck. "I mean, conspiring with D-class, unauthorized use of anomalies…"
"I think they can get behind the idea of you not wanting to die," you bluntly replied, causing him to nod. Truth be told you weren't quite sure what to expect if you managed to get out of here alive somehow.
"Yeah… that's true," Carter rubbed his eyes before returning to pick up his newly modified gun. He inspected it closely, humming to himself.
"Leap of faith… let's hope this holds up," he said mostly to himself. You moved to stand against the wall, sliding so you were seated. This was the calmest everything had been so far, and you allowed yourself to relax just a little, safe in the presence of another person.
"Normal gun wasn't good enough?" You quipped, a smile showing on your face. Carter returned with a slight grin of his own.
"Against humans, maybe…" he placed the gun on a crate, sitting down next to it, not too far away from you. "Against monsters beyond my comprehension, I don't know."
"How did you even end up taking this job?" you pried, eager to make some small talk. Carter pursed his lips as if in thought.
"Dunno, I just saw something I wasn't supposed to," he began, fiddling with his gloved hands. "Handled it pretty well, got recruited after."
"I hope they at least pay you well, considering what you're dealing with," you mumbled, closing your eyes. Carter nodded slightly.
"I got my own apartment, that says something,"he responded as he leaned his elbows on his knees. "Can't tell anyone what I do, though."
"Figures as much, must be pretty lonely." Your legs had started feeling like lead, and the headache remained dull in the back of your mind. Despite all that, you felt somewhat safe.
"Maybe we can wait the breach out here," Carter suggested as if he had read your mind. You contemplated it for a bit. Carter seemed to notice your hesitation as he spoke up again. "I mean, we're locked in here, nothing can really get us…"
"The doors randomly open, remember?" You reminded him. "The cell I locked that plague doctor in also opened back up."
"Yeah, that's true, but we could just…" he trailed off. A deep sigh came from his dry lips. "Yeah, no, you're right."
"I don't really think we're safe anywhere." Speaking the words out loud made you realize how hopeless it all sounded. "Best bet is to make a break for the gates."
"If we make it that far, with all the bodies around I'm starting to not like our chances," Carter replied, his voice cracking midway through.
"Better than staying here locked in here with these things," you replied, playing with the scratchy fabric of the jumpsuit.
"Guess there's no other choice…" he reiterated, taking a deep breath and letting the silence wash over the both of you again. The only noise came from the other tortured souls targeted deep within the facility.
