“I can’t believe it's our first year.” The sounds of the distant waves crashing against the shore act as white noise. Five pairs of eyes opening to the dark sky above them felt somewhat sentimental staring up at their bright twinkling lights. It was one last hurrah before the end of the summer break. She would've hesitated if it meant not being sandwiched between him and Seokmin in the back of Hansol’s Jeep.
“I can’t-” Suddenly Seungkwan’s voice is muffled by Hansol’s hand.
He’s left completely unbothered by his friends' protests and explains “You talk too much. Let’s just enjoy this moment together.”
Mingyu pouts, “He has a point,” nudging her knee with his as their eyes cross paths. “It’s still hard to believe you’ve barely started and you’re already thinking of transferring.”

“Not really, I mean NYU’s been my dream school ever since I learned it's where my parents met.” Sitting up with her knees close to her chest and her arms locked holding on to them. She stares up into the night sky for some sort of answer.
Mingyu joins her position, leaning against each other's shoulders to deter some of the crisp and cold fall atmospheres. “Is it really the school of your dreams if you let the admissions deadline slip your mind?”
“I was preoccupied…” She states a matter of fact before finishing up the can of beer in her hand. Crushing it into a circular shape, and throwing it into the small plastic bag with recycling. Mingyu looks down at the sand, pursing his lips to keep him from saying anything. He became noticeably irritated by what she was insinuating.
“Ewww. Please tell me you’re not talking about Jeonghan Hyung.” Seungkwan gives the side-eye before he sits up and crosses his legs.
“I think I’m gonna throw up,” Seokmin adds to the fire, hands-on his mouth as if he were to keep the sickness in his mouth at the thought of his friend. “Someone please change the subject.” He grabs hold of the backpack on his chest, much like you would a pillow.
“Why do you have to go so far away?” Seungkwan adds on to the long list of complaints.
“I don’t want my life to be predetermined by the shadow of my brother's reputation.” She shuddered at the thought of Seungcheol finding out about her plan. He was great by every sense of the meaning; top of his classes, volunteering, hard-working, team captain, and still made time for family. Having your parents work abroad really pushed the two of them together. Which is great and all but it also seemed to result in her brother becoming increasingly overprotective. Finding out she’s been hiding secrets from him like meeting up with Jeonghan or moving across the country could easily cause a discrepancy in their relationship. Her friend's reactions seemed to only support that assumption.
“And we love that for you Y/N but, it feels like you’re moving too fast. First it’s the move, meeting new people on campus, before we know it you're ignoring our texts to meet up with some cool high fashion art students that are as extra as their berets.” Seungkwan further voices his concerns.
“Like I'd leave you guys hanging like that. Besides I plan to make up every minute we won’t be together by spending the rest of my free time with you guys.”She reassuringly rubs his back.
“Ooo in that case let’s play something fun, something we haven’t played in years.” Hansol comes to her aid, as the smirk on his face grows more suggestive. “Truth or dare.”

“I hate you.” Seungkwan half yells at Hansol, his body shivering as they descend towards the end of an underwater cave. It wasn’t uncommon for games between the group to get intense. Even more so when Mingyu wants to prove his daringness. Several rounds of truth or dare pushed them towards a restricted section of the beach where low tide showed the mystery that lay beneath the ocean. If one were willing, they could travel further down into an underwater cave.
“Oh shush, everything's fine.” Mingyu crosses his arms as they admire the surrounding water.
Seungkwan scoffed before pointing at their clothes. “Says the dumbass freezing in a swimsuit.”
“What else would you wear to the beach?” Mingyu looks at him in concern whilst also trying to gauge Y/N’s reaction.
She simply rolls her eyes before throwing the shirt he had been wearing earlier at his face. “It’s getting cold, put your shirt back on.”
Seokmin released an audible chuckle causing his taller friend to warn him with his intense stare. Earning him a light smack on the arm. The two continue to throw hands at each other until Y/N turns to suggest the three of them focus on not losing Hansol, the both nod in agreement acting as if nothing happened. Mingyu continues giving the side eye to his friend as they venture further down the cave.
“Did you know the likelihood of dying in an underwater cavern is 5%?” Hansol’s voice carries through the room in echoes as he takes the lead in front of the group. The distance between him and the others was significant but not enough for the large, sandy-coloured, stalactites and stalagmites to obscure their view. He comes to a point where the hole in the cave shines the moonlight on to where a little lake is forming.
“Why the fuck would you say that?” Seungkwan murmurs under his breath in frustration, trying to prevent himself from tripping on the uneven cave floor. “I’m already flipping my shit as is. I swear to god Chwe Hansol you’re going to get us all killed because of your stupid games-“
“Guys…” For the first time, everyone hears a groan unfamiliar to the group. “I think someone’s in here with us.” Hansols travels further up ahead towards the lake, his feet landing softly on the sand as they jump off the rocks.
Mingyu and Y/N follow closely, their eyes landing on a dark blue fishtail, with scales and fins split into four distinct ends shining bright under the moonlight. From the look of his bare chest shivering and the squinting pain from his crescent-shaped eyes and rosy face that his temperature was rising. There was something about the black beach waves shaping his face that left her utterly speechless. She heard of mermaids before in fairytales her parents would tell her as a kid. No amount of exposure to books of that nature could prepare her to have actual contact with a mythical sea creature.
“Holy shit.” Seokmin’s immediate panic caused the sediments to shake slightly at the sound. Before he can turn to run out of the cave, rock protruding from the wall grabs hold of the strap of his backpack. In an instant, a grunt could be heard as the group turned away from the passed-out sea creature to see their friend's face planted into the sand.
“Seokmin!” They yell in unison. Seungkwan quickly went to his aid to help him up only to find him passed out.
———————-
“Oh no.” Mingyu looks down at his phone, blowing off the loose sand that sat on its case. A series of missed calls and texts obscured the picture of his family on his lock screen.
Y/N, who stands by his side peers over the device before pulling away to see his sour expression. “What’s wrong?”
“My parents found out I snuck out.” He complains, the pout on his face slowly turning into a frown. The phone slipped into the pockets of his pants before opening the passenger's seat for Y/N.
“Snuck out?” Vernon chuckles as he enters the driver's seat. “You do realize we’re in our 20’s, right?” Adjusting the strap of his seatbelt and the rearview mirror. He stares at Mingyu’s reflection before teasing, “How do you still have a curfew?”
“Shut up, not everyone is made of money. I live in their house so I have to play by their rules.”
“It is late.” Y/N opens the sun visor to check for any sand that could’ve ended up on her face and hair. She grabs hold of the end preparing to place it back in a closed position until Seungkwan’s expression causes her to turn around in her seat. It was unlike him to be quiet for so long, as his loss in thought causes his eyes to stare blankly at the back of Vernon’s seat. “What’s with the face?” She teased.
“How can you act all normal after what we’ve witnessed?” Seungkwan all but whispers as he looks down at the floor below him. His legs were there, kicking away at his bag on the floor. Somehow he thought there would be some confirmation that it was all a dream like suddenly he’d poof right back into his bedroom. He realized then and there it couldn't be farther from the truth. “We saw a monster and you guys can focus on is Mingyu’s stupid curfew?!”
“Don’t be rude, that Merman probably has feelings,” Seokmin recalls while staring outside the window. The light of the moon makes the waves appear almost luminescent. “I hope he’s okay.”
“That’s very sweet of you, but I think we need to check if you’re okay. You took a nasty fall after trying to leave us with the merman.” Y/N interrupts. An attempt was made to patch the small cut above his brow in the cave. It shocked her when she realized she had forgotten the small first-aid kit in her purse at home. It wouldn't amount to the surprise she felt when the mermaid offered to share his bioluminescent light from his tail. However, it was a close second. She’d have to get a better look at the cut tomorrow.
“Y/N, you touched him. What if he imprinted on you or something? He’ll come back for you for sure.”
“What is this twilight? He’s a fucking fish.”
“Can we stop talking about this?” Mingyu grumbled. The moment he laid eyes on the creature something felt off as if his world shifted. The lines of reality and fairytale began to blur along with his common sense. He along with the rest of the group forgot to document the event. It didn’t help his case that the so-called “injured merman” was able to muster enough power to flirt with Y/N the entire time. The faster they could forget about this event the better it would be for all of them.
“This isn’t exactly something that can be easily forgotten. I didn’t even get their name.” Y/N objects.
“The last thing we need to worry about is his name. I don’t even want to know what would happen if the government found out. We did our part; he’s back into the ocean.” Seungkwan fumed. It was obvious everyone had been somewhat rattled by the experience.
“Okay that’s enough, everyone’s hand on the console.” The stress was evident and Y/N didn’t need Seungkwan getting high blood pressure before their audition for the Musical Theatre Program. “To ease your pain let’s promise to each other that whatever happens at this beach will stay at this beach. Do I make myself clear?”
Slowly each head looks up to Y/N. Nodding away. Seungkwan and Mingyu were more enthusiastic than others to bury this in the pay and move on. The older of the two quickly wrapped everything up and sighed in relief, “Great, now let’s head home before I get my ass beat.”
“Listen Y/N I don’t know what emergency you have that’s so important that you can’t even FaceTime- HOLY SHIT.” Mingyu stops dead in his tracks as he enters Y/N’s living room. The couch where the five of them spend Saturday movie nights was now occupied by a new tenant. He hadn’t quite decided if this guest was welcomed or not and the fact that this man was now sitting on his corner of the couch didn’t help his case. Correction, Merman. By the looks of everyone else’s face he could confirm he wasn’t in fact dreaming about today or the day before.
Y/N could feel the tension in the air. Perhaps she thought, she should take the least, “You guys remember Soonyoung right?”
Y/N could feel the tension in the air. Perhaps she thought, she should take the least, “You guys remember Soonyoung right?”
The man of the hour cautiously stands up on his feet before making his way over. Mingyu hadn’t noticed at first but Soonyoung wore one of Seungcheol’s shirts from volleyball. “It’s great to meet the rest of you again. Thank you for saving my life.” He bows respectfully before gesturing to the couch for them to sit. Hoshi sat quietly at his side not bothering to look at these new faces.
Seokmin instinctively elbows Mingyu, it was unlike the life of the party to be speechless. He manages to cut in “It’s no problem, I’m sure you would’ve done the same if the tables were turned.” He continues to carry on the conversation from beside Soonyoung on the couch. Mingyu makes his way towards the extra coach space on the lazy boy beside the merman but is blocked by the orange haired Mainecoon. The feline quickly laid down with its tail wrapping around itself in comfort. He was never been fond of cats and after an episode between him and his neighbor cat he could confidently say the feeling was mutual. Quietly he opts to occupy the floor instead, trying his best to stretch his long legs across without bumping into the glass coffee table.
Y/N tries to dispel the tension in the room by heading towards the kitchen. “I’ll be right back with some water. Seungkwan and Hansol, do you mind helping out please?”

The three of them make their way to the back of the house, Seungkwan looked towards living room to ensure they were out of hearing range. Finally he half whispers and yells into his friend, “What in gods name is he doing here?”
“I’m just as confused as you are.” Y/N turns to her fridge and takes out a blue Brita pitcher, as she continues, “I was bussing home from work and when I got off he was standing in front of the stop in front of my house.”
Hansol in the meantime opens the cupboards for enough glasses for everyone, setting them down on a serving tray kept on the counter close by.
“No I mean. why is he here!” Seungkwan drags the last word out before peeking at the living room.
“He says he has nowhere to go. Something about not being able to go back to the waters for now.” Y/N couldn’t help but pout as she recalled the story he told her. Soonyoung wanted to get away from the responsibilities as the son of a Government official, one of his friends offered him a getaway up on the surface but they never came through. Y/N knew the others wouldn’t have understood so there really wasn’t a point in telling them what was told in confidence. “Besides, he looked like he got hit by a bus when I found him. I couldn’t just leave him.”
“You could’ve.” Hansol mutters under his breath earning him a light smack on the arm from Y/N. With all the glasses filled with water, they started to make their way back only to be stopped.
“If the Government finds out they’ll take him away and punish you for not turning him in.” Mingyu’s voice filled the room like a boom as he stood leaning against the frame of the kitchen leading toward the dining and living room.
“DON'T SNEAK UP ON ME LIKE THAT!” Seungkwan yelled.
Y/N, placed a finger over her lips to quiet him down. This only earned her an eye roll. Mingyu’s face was evident of worry as she answered him “Look I’m just helping him lie low until he can find a safer place to stay.”
“I can’t believe this.” He scoffs before rolling his eyes.
She passes the tray over to Mingyu who easily carries all 6 glasses with ease. He could tell right away she wasn’t going to give up, as she whispering to him, “I don’t want the Government to kill the guy. He’s had it rough.”
Mingyu was the only one who could see how determined she was to protect Soonyoung. Like a little kid trying to heal the wing of a bird that fell down from its nest, he knew he couldn’t convince her with plan conversation. “Well would you rather Seungcheol kill you? Cause that’s probably what’s gonna happen after he finds out!”
“When he finds out what exactly?” A familiar voice causes all four friends to feel a chill go down their necks. The shock was evident on Y/N’s face could say it all as her brother walks through the front doors.
