Cyfrin: Guide, prisoner, hero, villain, disciple, heathen, The-King-Who-Fled. He has many titles, and he doesn't much care which one is used. The brother of the late queen, Cyfrin has spent the years since his sister's death languishing in a prison cell, spared for the crime of attempted regicide only by his relation to the royal family as well as the fact that no one knows what happened. When he is sent north with an entourage including his nephew the prince, the prince's fiancee (and sister to the northern king), he fully intends to live out the rest of his days in an icy cell. But when the ship they're on sinks, he sees a way out: guide the surviving princess home and her brother will doubtless grant him a pardon out of gratitude. And as they make their way north, Cyfrin finds himself being challenged by a stronghearted princess who might just cause him to face the ghosts of his past and cause him to question what it is he desires more: Freedom or Redemption.
