BEAUTIFUL Tawaka from earlier this year.
Tawaka, or the Poplar mushroom, Cyclocibe parasitica, is a fungus that infects and parasitises many different kinds of trees, but usually only infects trees that are already weakened by some other factor or injury. They do eventually kill the trees they colonise, but in the mean time they produce large slippery and delicious mushrooms. When they grow, the entire flush is usually quite large, and can provide a very tasty and nutritious meal.

I love how diverse the colours on tawaka can be! There are so many where I am currently, it makes walking through the bush very satisfying, especially around felled infected trees with lots of exposed surface area.
