CYB REPENTED IS OUT IN AUSTRALIA AHHHHH
After yesterday's album release and concert, there has been this crazy ass conspiracy theory that BMTH only went to pop slowly over time to get deathcore into mainstream
Actual one bit brain take
Oli didn't want to perform anything from CYB to There is a Hell for 2 reasons
He was a struggling drug addict. Every song he wrote between SS and Sempiternal were basically his tiny suicide notes one by one. Don't you think this was draining him at least a little bit? Being constantly reminded that you were a fucked up kid?
He admitted he was tone-deaf and never learned how to scream properly. He was in pain when he screamed and before Jordan joined, he didn't learn to write songs. On SS and There is a Hell, he had a lot of help from others when it comes to songwriting. CYB is basically carried by Lee and Curtis, they were the super talented kids, Oli just happened to have a unique way of screaming which worked for deathcore.
This had happened to a lot of metal/metalcore singers of his era. Matt Tuck, Matt Heafy, Corey Taylor and many others had the same fallout with screams just to return to the heavy stuff after the poppier albums failed and they actually had to learn how to scream so they don't damage their voices and they still remain commercially successful.
The fact that we got BMTH playing deathcore is due to the fact that Oli is happy. He is a father, a husband, and a sober, super-workaholic dude who finally got his shit together so he is now able to embrace all the songs he avoided because of bad memories.
BMTH will bring the poppier stuff back too. Their schtick is the same as Linkin Park's: never make the same album twice. They will keep experimenting, changing looks and sounds to keep everything fresh. CYB turning 20 and revicalcore being an actual genre was just a rabbit hole they went down on, that they hadn't thought would worked, but it did.
I'm glad that people like it, tho some deathcore purists calling it overproduced actually hurts my brain
Okay so I listened to CYB Repented, in full. Here are my comments:
I never realized how front-heavy CYB is, mostly because I haven't listened to it in full for a long long time. Almost all the bangers are in the first few tracks
Buster made the production clean, but not too clean. The mix is very bass heavy, the breakdowns sound almost like thrown or Humanity's Last Breath instead of BMTH
Oli's screams are great, though there seems to be some effect on the vocal tracks imo. I heard some live recordings and he goes way deeper than that on the album (or the original btw), it might be just a mixing decision and his exhaustion live, idk
The higher guitar tones in some songs are kind of lost, which makes the original sound better in some cases. This is very pronounced in Slater and Pray for Plagues. Other than this, the new mix for these songs is perfect.
Drums are very loud, which makes sense cause most of the songs are fast but I think they are kinda too loud, signature of modern metal mixing, does not fit songs written in 2006
Dragon Slaying is a great song that I never knew, I'm glad they rerecorded it
Oli doesn't do his signature Suicide Season-style scream on the record at all, maybe in one segment of Dehumanized, but it is surprising because they exist on the original CYB a few times (I know he did mainly deathcore growls and high screams on CYB, but I miss the emo days)
The songs that are more melodeath don't sound that good imo, the more old school influence they have, the worse the new mix sounds. Songs like Off the Heezay and Medusa have some really blunt harmonies that are almost inaudible. Maybe it's gonna get better for me when I hear it in lossless.
Fifteen Fathoms, Counting makes next to no sense as a remake because it sounds just like the original. I guess they did it because it's part of the album.
Off The Heezay is a great closing track but the fact that we have Dehumanized afterwards makes the record a bit incoherent. The latter is good by itself but aside from the genre, it doesn't really fit. If Dehumanized was the first track instead and Pray for Plagues started after it, that would have honestly made it a bit better
