How to Cut Costs With Advice from Travel Blogger Natalie Sisson
We all know that traveling includes numerous expenses. Many travelers feel as though they have to spend a ton of money every time they travel, but that is not always the case. Even if airfare and lodging expenses are high, there are other ways to cut out unnecessary costs. Unnecessary costs could include things we do not even think about, including cell phone service and paying for upgrades that are not needed. Regardless of where you travel, there will always be ways to cut out unnecessary costs and still get a five-star experience.
Be smart about transportation.
Even though it’s extremely convenient to take a cab everywhere you decide to explore, the cab fare can add up fast. Sometimes it is necessary to use a cab to get to more distant destinations, but if you are exploring somewhere close by there are better modes of transportation that will help save a few dollars. Walking is the most ideal way to get to close destinations and allows you to explore on your own. Most of the time you will pass other interesting places to explore while on your way to your destination. Walking allows you to be on your own schedule and it’s free. When I was in Italy, my mom made me walk everywhere. Even though it was hot and I wanted to take a cab, I was grateful she made me walk. We explored side streets and came across a lot of interesting culture while walking around. I also felt better about myself because I was walking off all the amazing food (and carbs) I consumed. Walking provides exercise, fresh air, and more opportunities to explore. If walking is just not an option, try using public transportation. Even though you have to follow their schedule, it is a cheaper than taking a cab. Depending on where you are, it is also more convenient because there are several public transportation stops, whereas you have to call and wait for a cab.
Stay connected for less.Â
Nowadays, it is extremely hard to travel without any type of connection to the real world. Whether we want to be able to communicate with those at home or we just can’t wait to post our favorite pictures from exploring that day, communication is essential during traveling. Communication can also be expensive, especially if you are traveling internationally. One of the best ways to stay in touch while traveling is using Wi-Fi. Most destinations offer free Wi-Fi, especially resorts and hotels. Turning off cellular data and just using Wi-Fi is a great way to stay connected and save a lot of money from roaming fees and international data use. There are many communication apps that are available for download, such as Skype and GroupMe, that run off Wi-Fi and will help you stay in touch.
