New Halloween pattern added to my red bubble!
Ready for fall!
Did you know that pumpkins and zucchini can hybridise?Â
Both domestic squash are members of the same species (Cucurbita pepo) so interbreeding is inevitable if they’re grown in the same garden. The offspring have a mix of pumpkin and zucchini characteristics. The two squash pictured here were seeds from a pumpkin pollinated with pollen from a zucchini.Â
I haven’t evaluated their culinary value yet because I’m letting develop into hard skinned winter squash like their pumpkin parent. A pumpkin/zucchini hybrid is probably safe to eat, but in gardens where ornamental winter squash are grown hybrid squash should be avoided. This is because ornamental squash have high levels of a dangerous toxin that could be passed to their half-pumpkin progeny.
