Custom Grid- Triangle
For this pattern, I combined at least four copies of my motif so that they formed a triangle-shaped motif. I then rotated the triangle so that the longest side was vertical, and began stacking each triangle on top of one another in each column. There is strong contrast with this pattern, and the negative and positive shapes balance each other out. This allows for the pattern formed by the mark-making inside the positive space to work and stand out, unlike in my basic grid where it just made everything too busy. There is also a slight overlapping effect in which the diamond shapes appear below the trapezoidal shapes(both positive shapes) due to their slight difference in value. Nonetheless, the pattern overall has a good figure/ground relationship. In addition, the shapes blend nicely together to create continuity. This pattern doesn’t have much movement, but the shapes keep it interesting. The diamond shapes form an implied zig-zag line horizontally across the pattern, as well the trapezoidal shapes when they touch points.
