joseph had never known himself to be adverse to heights.
not that he’d ever sought them out, truly; his only real points of reference were the odd plane flights, or the once or twice he’d needed the aid of a boost or ladder to reach something.
all of those paled quite easily nearly as much as he had, precarious stories up, a single, gnarled spire that had once lived as a support beam the only means forward. the buildings were unstable to be spoken generously. now and again he was sure he heard another collapse in the distance, the sound of falling rubble and shrieking metal on metal some sort of twisted ambient lullaby.
he forced himself not to think about it too hard, to stay present, one cautious, barely-lifted step at a time, for anything greater than that was sure to knock him off balance.
hell, a strong wind felt like it could do that, but by some small miracle the air remained eerily still.
just a few careful feet more carrying his pulse in the back of his throat and he could at least dare to make a lunge in safe arm’s reach of someone else - someone who’d had the nerve to cross the threshold with all the graceful ease of someone who had never had a healthy fear of anything in his life.
then, joseph supposed, adam had yet to strongly emote much at all, far be it for him to start now.
