Artistβs Statement
The first series of 16 photographs reflects electronic glitches of important memories in my life. Using my own documentation of my memories, I wish to reflect upon the affects which technology has on how we remember important milestones in our lives. Because technology is a large part of our lifestyles, we depend on it to store our photographic memories (which make up majority of our identity). Placing our trust in something that can be so easily manipulated, therefore affects how we perceive our own memories. Often, technology can be unreliable as human imperfections often drive one to overlook an important area which guarantees success, therefore placing our memories in the firing line of failure. The second series of this artwork, unlike the first, reflects upon the fragility of human memories. This fragility is largely dependent on the passing of time and certain events that occur which may play a large role in altering ones memories. Due to the malleable nature of human memory, we can therefore consider ourselves, as well as technology, unreliable in preserving our own memories, because as humans, we are the most affected by time. We are prone to decay, dragging along our memories with us. Technology can be rebuilt, each time becoming more successful in storing our identities. But the mystery of the human mind demands to be left unsolvable. This series is therefore a little more personal to me. Part three of the artwork, a compilation of home videos, aims to communicate the various memories which I share with my cousins and how time has made each memory almost translucent and hard to grasp due to the addition of more memories (seen through the layering of hime videos on top of one another). The use of personal home videos implements a part of my own personality into the artwork which I think is more relatable and more engaging with the viewer. In this work, I have attempted to give insight into my own memory bank at this particular time and the use of home videos (personal experiences and milestones) gives this artwork a little more personality. It takes glitching to a slightly more graceful yet surreal level. The electronic voice narration in the form a phone conversation, further hones in on a few personal memories but also ties in technological failures as well as human failures to preserve and present memory.
