...I'm hopping off of the carousel. Actually, it started to feel more like a treadmill. Fashion blogging has changed immensely since I first set out in 2006. Back then, I swore up and down that I would never show my face, let alone divulge my full name, on these here interwebs. Back in those days, all I did was write. Nowadays, I think most people hear 'fashion blogger' and think that you are a person who takes photos of yourself every day. I never set out to be that person. Yet somehow I became that person. And it's really not my thing anymore. Everything gelled at once. The not shopping, the deaths of hundreds because everyone wants to eat their marbles faster and faster, the piles of worn-once-or-twice fast fashion garments crammed into the racks of thrift stores that I see when I go on excursions for my vintage store. I'm one person, and I can't really affect that much change in the world. I don't want to buy something new and just hope it came from a good place. I figure if being more of a vintage and home-sewn-wearing gal is going to help me not contribute to more waste and death, then I'm cool with that.
At What Cost? by Catie Nienaber (May 7th, 2013)
Spotted (SF Street Style): Cuffington's Catie N.
San Francisco fashion blogger Catie Neinaber, who pens the always-good-for-a-read Cuffington blog and never fails to impress with her vintage-inspired looks, caught up with us outside her Lower Haight office looking as stylish as ever and ready for the rain. Read on for her favorite shops, outfit inspirations and time-killers in the city that surrounds us.
What is your favorite place to shop in the city?
Ver Unica in Hayes Valley, it’s in my neighborhood. The owner is really nice and everyone that works there is full of sunshine. I cannot walk in there without buying something, it’s so well done. It’s the kind of vintage that is more 70’s and 80’s or vintage that would mix seamlessly with modern clothing.
What inspired your outfit today and who are you wearing?
I was cold, so I wore my Wellington boots to work. I was feeling really wintery today, so I choose to look textured with my vintage tweed pants and vintage sweater. I wanted to wear easy shoes so I wore my Lanvin flats. My coat is Burberry and bag Chloe. Â
Who are your current style influences?
In my mental mood board, right now, I have two people. Dita Von Teese and Ashley Olsen. They are both five feet tall, but they dress really well for their body type and are very daring. Dita isn’t afraid of color. Ashley could wear anything, and it would make sense. She’s also a bit more buttoned up, and I tend to be buttoned up.
What’s your favorite neighborhood to kill time in the city?
I used to live in Pacific Heights, and I really like it there because the architecture is really beautiful and when I walk down the streets, I feel like I should be singing a song from My Fair Lady. There’s a lot of history there, and it’s just really kind of romantic.

Oh hello again.
t's been a long but fruitful hiatus, and your girl is back.

What to expect from The Holden Archive in the coming months:
Art reviews - There is so much happening in the San Francisco gallery scene that I'd love to share with you.
Less labels, more fashion - If you're like me, you've grown up a bit and have truly gotten over label whoredom. If not, I highly recommend you read Dana Thomas' Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster (Penguin, New York: 2007). One of my fashion heroes, Catie of Cuffington.com, gave this to me and it is enlightening to say the least.Â
More of what I do in art - It's a tough road to hoe, but I am a working artist, and I'd love to share the process (and maybe even finished products) with you.
I'd also like to do some more interviews, Q&As, and connect with YOU, dear readers. Even though this is a Tumblr-powered site, The Holden Archive is anything but a one-way street. So, if you'd like, please "Ask me anything" and start a discussion.
For those of you who like more fashion-centric sites, I recommend:
Cuffington
FashionForWriters
and
TheSFStyle
And finally, for those of you left interested in my general life-craziness (love, engagements, marriage: all from a City Girl's perspective, you can go see my other blog, SFLoveStory (there's cool pictures there too that have nothing to do with anything in the lovely Tumblr way)...yeah, it's a big messy diary.
xx,
Holden
