Bug of the Day
I bet you did not know that you could custom order your caterpillars in GREEN leather ;-).
(goldenrod hooded owlet, Cucullia asteroides)
Brown-hooded Owlet Moth (Cucullia convexipennis), caterpillar, family Noctuidae, Cleveland, OH, USA

Cucullia convexipennis or the Brown Hooded Owlet is a really stunning moth. It blends in perfectly with this piece of pine bark it was sitting on. Only a few more weeks before it should be warmer and many more moths will be flying! #entomology #moth #cucullia #cuculliaconvexipennis #brownhoodedowlet #owlet

Cucullia argentea アオモンギンセダカモクメ
2021, Japan
Brown hooded owlet (Cucullia convexipennis), Hockessin DE, October 2017.
Another name used for the brown hooded owlet is the Calico, which refers to the color appearance of the caterpillar, a series of orange, yellows, and black patterning which makes the insect seem more tropical than temperate. These caterpillars are common in old fields, meadows, and grasslands, where they feed on plants in the aster family, especially goldenrod. The yellow bands on the caterpillar’s body probably aid it in hiding among goldenrod flowers during the day.
One generation in the Mid-Atlantic, with adults by early summer and caterpillars throughout the season. Caterpillars overwinter as pupae.
I found my first ever Cucullia convexipennis (Brown Hooded Owlet) at a local park this past weekend! Aren't they pretty!? #moth #cucullia #cuculliaconvexipennis #brownhoodedowlet #caterpillar #goldenrod #nature #finds #entomology
