“Of COURSE I know where the map came from!” Dipper snapped back at the Shape with just as much venom. “I’m not stupid, even though she apparently thinks I am!”

The demon seemed absolutely convinced that they were, somehow, the reason for the twins’ fight and Mabel’s subsequent little venture into the woods. And that wasn’t completely wrong, but the blame didn’t fall solely on their shoulders, either. Even so, Dipper didn’t take kindly to the demon shouting at them about it, and that certainly didn’t put him in any kind of mood to be agreeable.

“I’m awake, so that’s something. So overall I’ve been fine... I can tell, you’ve been through a lot it seems. Would you care for some tea?”

“Nice walk?” they asked.

Sawyer said nothing. They sighed and got up, to join him on the bed. “Hey, kid. What’s up?”

Sawyer was silent a few more moments. And then he said, “Why didn’t you tell me you’d met Sixer?”

This made the other pause. “...Did you see him today?”

“Yeah.” Sawyer was gazing at the table by the woodstove, for some reason. “He didn’t seem real happy you’re here.”

Something in Amos’ expression immediately soured, but they hitched an indifferent smile back onto their face. “Oh, you know the Stanfords, always overreacting!” They twiddled their thumbs a little nervously. “He’s not coming here, is he?”

“No.”

The two of them sat in silence. The birds were chattering outside. The sun filtered through the pines, casting bright, dancing spots on the wood floor of the cabin.

“Something happened today, didn’t it,” Amos said after a while. Sawyer nodded slowly.

They reached over to take Sawyer’s hand. “What was it?”

Sawyer flinched. They knew, they knew he could never not answer a question from them...

It took some gentle pushing, but eventually he opened up.

Some time later, after a long talk, Sawyer had his head resting on his friend’s arm, eyes closed.

“If I were in my real shape right now,” they were saying, “I’d take you to the Quadrangle. The two of us could just get lost for a little while...”

Sawyer nodded. They reached a hand around to pat his head. “You’ve been doing so well, you know that?”

Sawyer stirred a little, but said nothing.

“I keep telling you, you’ve got an understanding of things now.” They smiled. “There’re many places I wish I could take you, you know. Maybe someday. There’s this one sweet little world I remember, you would like it, it’s so soft and green, and the stars at night...”

Bill could feel his anger rising, but he didn’t care. Were they serious right now? It had taken enough out of him to deal with this crap from Ford (only to have that then further blow up in his face), and he wasn’t about to expend the energy to be ‘nice’ about this here.
