tuesday. watercolors, finally. i dont know how to use them. exercises, exercises. how do you make a perfect circle? cant. i like circles because no one expects you to be perfect. i forgot my palette in the dorm. late to the long exam. slept in. hard. wanted to fall asleep. realization: i always want to fall asleep. finally in the sewing room. cool. one day we will be here too. realization: time is fleeting. high school is over. college will be one day too. and after that, life. remind me to not wear three inch heels. watched a debate (art vs. design). should have videotaped it, guys. designer presentation. realization: public speaking. still no. like seriously no. pictures and more pictures.
thursday. plates. finally drawing clothes and people and coloring them. amazing. i like my output. maybe thats because i havent seen it in a while. discussion. realization: fashion is a lifestyle. have to interpret the world differently. see the world differently. live; breathe fashion and find yourself in the spaces that remain. guest speaker. ms katty. psychology has always been interesting. my life would be a lot different if i took bs psych. or any other course at all, really. such is the way of life. speed dating activity. order drinks. bottomless iced tea and service water. impulse buying? i like iced tea and free water. hello to my partners hot tea, margarita and service water, hot chocolate hot tea and service water. guessed 1 and ½, ½. so 2. hah. math. service water. realization: am i really the type of person who has to rehearse conversations because its either that or a mental block? sad life. really blanked out at asking? what to ask? what do i have the right to ask? wonder, wonder.

(but its great).

Is Fashion Important?
It is a fact generally accepted that clothing is of importance to human society. From our birth to our passing, clothes are a feature in our everyday lives. It is unquestionably important. However, fashion, (defined here as (n.) a popular way of dressing during a particular time or among a particular group of people), despite being part and parcel of clothing, is sometimes viewed as of lesser importance, especially for those who prize clothes based on functionality. They view it as a frivolity and a luxury, at times even completely unnecessary. This is especially palpable in the film Marie Antoinette (2006). Everyone is at the very least somewhat familiar with France’s infamous queen. On the surface, it seems as though she had a hand in the ruin of France with her overzealous spending and seeming indifference, but no story can be fully explained in a sentence or two. For she was a product of circumstance, an oblivious lady shipped off to France and made to give up her roots in order to secure a steadier alliance between France and her home country Austria. She was young and alone, but found comfort in the luxury of expensive dress and dessert. This was of course the norm for the upper echelon, but given her unpopularity with the court and France’s turmoil, she was not beloved to the people. With France’s situation worsening and Marie Antoinette’s expenses unrelenting, she became the paradigm of the country’s problems. She was made to take a lot of blame, even gaining the title ‘Madame Deficit’. Eventually, she matured and toned down her opulent lifestyle, but by then there was no way of saving her image. The French Revolution came to fruition, ending her story with an execution. It is important to note that yes, should Marie Antoinette have not developed her tendency for lavish gowns and shoes, it would have helped France’s financial situation. One could even refer to these expenses as a part of fashion, referring to the costliness of high-end clothing, and make it a point against the importance of it. The point is further strengthened when the focus is broadened and the entirety of France’s high court comes into question. After all, it wasn’t merely Marie Antoinette that spent a fortune on their appearance; all the nobility was guilty of this act as well. But the thing is, the majority of them didn’t know any better. Most of them were born into their status, growing up amidst that extravagant lifestyle. While on some level they must have been aware that their way of living couldn’t be called ‘budget-friendly’, they were never actually given a scale of exactly how much was ‘enough’. It was, as most things are, a matter of perspective. The people who say fashion is not important have their reasons; be it frugality and practicality or a change in priorities. Obviously, those who say fashion is important also have their own reasons, say style or social function. I stand with the latter, despite perfectly understanding the constrictions of a budget, because after all, fashion is the product of two basic human needs: clothing and self-expression.
