#memoriesfromnewyork On March 16, 2019 I was fortunate to share stage with some great CHANGE MAKERS in New York at the African Powerful Partnership Awards Gala presented by Agro Biz during UN #CSW63 Please meet our keynote speaker HE Ambassador Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao African Union Ambassador to the United States with a passion in changing the narrative of the continent. She plays a key role in reinforcing the African Union strategic partnerships and the United States, grounded on shared values and mutual interests Her Excellency reminds us about the Berlin Conference of 1884 and its role on our current stalemate in Africa. Berlin Conference was a call for European countries to organize themselves and effectively loot from Africa, they chopped up Africa into tiny little economies that clearly cannot survive on their own all by design to make sure Africa and its people are forever defeated and dominated, easy to control and destabilize all for their own interest. One of her achievements is the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) January 2018 signed by 44 Africa countries in Kigali, Rwanda. Africa's greatest economic opportunity is Intra-African Trade which as of January 16, 2018 the World Bank statistics put Intra-African Trade at just 11%. In order for AfCFTA to go into effect, 22 out of the 44 countries must ratify the convention and as of today, 19 out of 22 countries have already ratified the treaty. Africa is moving towards a new path. Africa must rise from the ashes of colonial dysfunctionality into a basket of shared prosperity and mutual interest. Spent an eventful morning at the UN for one of the sixty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women's side events - "Launch of Strategy on Equality in Law for Women and Girls by 2030" There's still so much to be done with eliminating discriminatory laws in this world and enacting ones that promote gender equality, and what Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said in her closing remarks that resonated with me was that even with laws in place, they can be taken away by custom and tradition. This form of injustice is more pervasive in some societies, but even in the most developed nations, there can still be an underlying current of inequality.
